《毛泽东选集》内容十分丰富，包括新民主主义革命的理论、军事著作、哲学著作(包括思想方法与工作方法)、思想修养、文艺理论，等等。自从林彪提出学毛著的号召后，许多单位和部门掀起了学毛著的热潮。由于传统的道德随着传统文化的被批判而摒弃，广大干部群众便从毛著里的“老三篇”中吸取思想修养的营养。不远万里来到中国的白求恩、全心全意为人民服务的张思德和传说中挖山不止的愚公成为大家的学习榜样，涌现了助人为乐的雷锋等学习毛著的标兵。
对于涌现出大量好人好事的学毛著运动，林彪也及时给予加油、打气。他对于“老三篇”，曾有过这样一段名言：“‘老三篇’，不但战士要学，干部也要学。‘老三篇’，最容易读，真正做到就不容易了。要把‘老三篇’作为座右铭来学，哪一级都要学，学了就要用，搞好思想革命化。”有人为林彪这一段语录谱了曲，一时间到处传唱。林彪在《毛主席语录》上的题词也被印制成邮票。学毛著的群众运动又进一步提高了倡导者林彪的威信。
另外，林彪提倡学毛著是以毛泽东过去之正确来证明今日之正确。
在民主革命时期，毛泽东的才能和思想，并不是一开始便被党内多数人所认识到的。毛泽东的主张曾被讥讽为“狭隘经验论”，他在革命队伍中曾经被撤销政治局候补委员职务，三次被排挤出军队。直到遵义会议以后，毛泽东才在事实上逐步成为中共领导的核心。延安整风后，中共召开第七次全国代表大会，确立了毛泽东在全党全军的导师和领袖地位。随后用了四年半的时间，便打败蒋介石，建立了新中国。中国革命的伟大胜利使人们达成共识：跟着毛泽东走，就是胜利。
但是，新中国成立后不久，毛泽东却放弃了建设新民主主义社会的纲领，在生产力水平低下的情况下，急于进行社会主义革命，把苏联模式的计划经济和农业集体化误认为是社会主义的必由之路，在此基础上又提出总路线，发动“大跃进”，成立人民公社。
1958年风调雨顺，本是大丰收的年景，但由于“大跃进”、大炼钢铁，到年末已经出现了粮食紧张的状况。毛泽东虽然发现了问题，但并没有认识到症结所在，只是在郑州会议上作枝枝节节的调整。为了克服党内的怀疑、动摇情绪，毛泽东越来越频繁地重提民主革命时期他和战友们的分歧。
对此，罗瑞卿在揭发林彪的材料中写道：“1959年春，主席在上海的一次中央全会扩大会上，指名批评了×××。主席说：‘×××，因我不断同他的错误作斗争，他恨死我了。’主席还说：‘我这个人，就是喜欢同人家的错误作斗争。’接着，主席就挨次对着坐在主席台上当时的中央常委说：我同你不是在什么问题上作过斗争吗？我同你不是在那个问题上作过斗争吗？主席面对当时在座的每一个常委都说过一遍内容不同、形式相同的话。主席面对着林彪时说：‘我不是在会理会议上也同你作过斗争吗？’当时所有受到主席批评的人，包括×××，都没有作声。……至于这个林彪呢，在主席的话尚未讲完，就打断主席的话，满身摇摇晃晃，嬉皮笑脸地说：‘那是走得太疲劳了，就是冲动，简单地骂娘。’”
到1959年7月庐山会议召开的时候，毛泽东继续将重提历史上的党内斗争作为击败怀疑者和动摇者的武器。在庐山会议上，彭德怀给毛泽东写了一封信，对1958年以来的“左”倾错误提出了一些中肯的意见。毛泽东认为这封信已经触及路线问题，立即将会议由纠“左”转变为反右、批彭。7月31日，毛泽东发言说：“有些人在关键时刻就是动摇的，在历史上大风浪中就是不坚定的。历史上四条路线，立三路线、第一第二两次王明路线、高饶路线，现在又是总路线，站不稳，扭秧歌。”以后在几次发言中都算了彭德怀的老账，指责彭德怀“历来有野心”，是“内有二心，貌似张飞”，“在几次路线中都摇摆”。在批判支持彭德怀的张闻天时，翻张闻天曾经支持王明路线的老账，说张闻天是“旧病复发”，疟疾原虫“没有根治”。
毛泽东频繁地重提历史，显然不是“发思古之幽情”，而是为现实服务的。对此，林彪领会得最深。1962年，他在“七千人大会”上把产生三年经济困难的原因说成是：“在某些方面，在某种程度上，恰恰是由于我们有许多事情没有照着毛主席的指示、毛主席的警告、毛主席的思想去做而造成的。如果听毛主席的话，体会毛主席的精神，那么弯路会少走得多，今天的困难要小得多。”“我个人几十年来体会到，毛主席最突出的优点是实际，他总比人家实际一些，总是八九不离十。他总是在实际的周围，围绕着实际，不脱离实际。”由此，林彪得出一个“凡是”：“我深深地感觉到，过去的工作搞得好的时候，正是毛主席思想不受干扰的时候。凡是毛主席思想不受尊重，受到干扰时，就会出毛病。几十年的历史，就是这个历史。”
林彪这一段话正是以毛泽东过去的正确来证明今日的正确，从而起到了维护毛泽东错误主张的作用。林彪号召学毛著的内容主要是《毛泽东选集》，这些正是毛泽东“战无不胜”的记录。
