卦身有两种，一种名“月卦身”（亦简称卦身）；另一种名“世身”，世身是每卦必有，月卦身则是有的卦中有，有的卦中没有，没有的就称为“身不入卦”。
安月卦身主要看世爻的阴阳，按下述准则来定：
阴世则从午月起，阳世还从子月生；欲得识其卦中意，从初数至世方真。
例如占得巽卦，上爻为世爻，世爻是阳爻，从初爻为子往上数，二爻为丑，三爻为寅，四爻为卯，五爻为辰，上爻为巳，而巽卦的第五爻为辛巳，所以第五爻为卦身。
上九：兄弟———辛卯 世
九五：子孙———辛巳 （卦身）
六四：妻财— —辛未
九三：官鬼———辛酉 应
九二：父母———辛亥
