Lonely Planet is releasing its 2012 Best in Travel list today, not be confused with rival guidebook publisher Frommer's top 10 destinations list, which came out Monday.

The only overlap between the two: London. And that's not surprising, given that the Olympics are coming to town. The Lonely Planet list appears in an annual book, Lonely Planet's Best in Travel 2012 ($14.99), in stores now, but you can get the basics on the website.

The best cities list, including reasons to go next year and don't-miss sites, experiences and events, will be on the Lonely Planet website on Monday.
