1926年国共合作，毛泽东来到广州，代表中共参加国民政府的工作，被任命为代理宣传部长。广州政府为他配备了警卫人员和一辆老式的软篷轿车。这应该是毛泽东的第一辆座驾，虽然他使用这辆车的时间很短，总共大概只有两三个月。

1945年初，随着中美联军打通中印公路和滇缅公路，美国的援华物资开始源源不断地进入中国。延安的八路军也得到了不少军用物资，包括少量的美制卡车和维利斯军用吉普车。中央办公厅便给在延安的党政军领导人配备了吉普车。毛泽东分到的是一辆由美国福特公司1944年生产的4缸吉普，2.2升，功率为36.8千瓦，3挡变速器，最高时速102公里，4座，整车重约1吨。身材高大的毛泽东上下这辆福特吉普车颇有些不便，以至于有一次他对办公厅的同志开玩笑说，是不是能替他换一辆十轮大卡车？毛泽东就是坐着这辆吉普车到简易的延安机场，第一次坐美军顾问团的道格拉斯DC－3军用飞机赴重庆，与蒋介石商讨国共合作大计，也是乘坐这辆美制吉普车，从河北的西柏坡移驻北平。在进入北平前，毛泽东和朱德等还乘坐吉普车在西苑机场检阅了参加平津战役的解放军坦克部队，并留下了一张流传甚广的新闻照片。

1949年的12月21日是苏联元首斯大林70岁诞辰。为了向斯大林祝寿，毛泽东亲自率领中国党政代表团前往莫斯科，受到了苏联方面隆重热情的欢迎接待。在毛泽东即将离开莫斯科的前夕，斯大林向他赠送了一件不同寻常的贵重礼物——一辆斯大林亲自下令为毛泽东特制的吉斯115高级小轿车。吉斯115是装甲防弹保险车，底部和车身装有厚厚的装甲，整车重达7.2吨，沉重的防弹车窗玻璃必须借助液压系统才能升降。轮胎为双层结构，即使被机枪子弹击穿，还能行使50公里，车内驾驶座后还有一道可升降的防弹隔音玻璃。毛泽东一直到去世，都乘坐斯大林赠送的吉斯115。

毛泽东坐车很特别。他从来不坐别人的车，却极愿意别人来挤他的车。周恩来、陈毅、贺龙等领导同志都深知毛泽东的这个癖好，只要有机会，就会去挤毛泽东的车。1959年建国10周年大庆时，苏联代表团前来祝贺，赫鲁晓夫在听说了毛泽东的这一癖好后，欣然与刘少奇、周恩来加上秘书和保卫人员一共7个人与毛泽东挤坐在吉斯115里面，一起到人民大会堂参加国宴。
