近期，国内一些高校清理超期未毕业博士生，引来众人关注。特别是西南交大有两名1990年入校读博21年尚未毕业的学生，该校还有几十位读了15年、上百位读了10年未毕业的博士生，甚至有1人已六十有三。这些超期泛滥现象让人费解，甚至有点可笑。此前，华中科技大学、北京航空航天大学、华南农业大学等高校都曾对超期博士下过最后通牒。按照一般人的理解，中国的博士生以3年学习期完成后再延长两年为计算节点，怎么就能一下超出三四倍的时间呢？
从学校方面看，超期博士生背后暴露出了一些学校在学位制度和学籍管理等方面的不完善。在研究生招生和培养中，导师制徒有虚名。我有几位在大学当博导的同学，他们有的每人要招几十位博士生，加上硕士生就更多，根本顾不过来，形成“导师不导”的现象，只是在搞某个项目时才想起带学生，却又异化成一种老板与员工的关系。这样的研究生培养方式显然没有坚持学术标准。
从学生方面看，超期博士生主要是在职博士生，其中多是官员或企业管理者。这是一个较有中国特色的现象，有深刻的社会和历史原因。这些博士生或是公务繁忙、难以抽身，或是基础较差、力不从心，学习只能断断续续，难以专心致志做学问，超期很难避免；甚至一些人很少到校学习，最后还需找人代为完成论文，从而把一纸博士文凭混到手。至于学到多少知识，研究多少课题，另当别论。有的超期博士就像馒头，发面时放的酵母不合适或温度掌握不好，不管醒多长时间，蒸出来都会不暄腾，或发酸发苦发黄发涩，甚至成了死疙瘩。
最近听一位从美国回来的朋友讲起两个故事。一位同她一起参加一个中文论坛的先生，60多岁了，她以为他是哪个名校的教授，后经人介绍才知，这位老先生还是一位研究中国问题的在读博士生，他最早是在哥伦比亚大学学中文，也不知道他是不是超期了。还有一位美国的老太太，也60多岁了，当年读大学时有了孩子，休学生孩子，接着养家糊口，等着孩子大了，自己有了闲暇，又回到自己的母校，将未竟的学业继续读下去。这些在美国是稀松平常的事情，也没有人说超期不超期，因为在很多国家，研究生教育的通行做法是“弹性学制”。
看来，博士生的学籍该不该超期并不是最关键的问题，关键是，我们的高校为了学校的教育和学术声誉，是否应该坚持以“严进严出”的标准提高博士教育的质量？关键是，我们的博士生应该是真正全心全意地潜心研究学问的佼佼者，而不是为升官获利而把博士文凭当通行证的取巧者；关键是，我们要对得起我们这个拥有35万博士生的“世界第一博士大国”的称号。 （红 深）
