BEIJING, Dec. 16 (Xinhua) -- A senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) has called for more economic and cultural exchanges between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan and denounced "Taiwan independence" as a huge risk for the peace of the Taiwan Strait.
Jia Qinglin, chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference National Committee, made the remarks Friday at a conference to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the founding of the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits (ARATS).
The ARATS, established in 1991, is a non-governmental organization authorized by the mainland to engage in negotiations on issues related to exchanges across the Taiwan Strait.
Jia, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, hailed the irreplaceable role the ARATS has played in implementing the central government's Taiwan-related policies and boosting the development of cross-Strait relations by holding consultations with the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation (SEF).
In November 1992, the ARATS and the SEF reached the "1992 consensus", under which the two organizations acknowledge that "both sides of the Taiwan Straits adhere to the one-China principle." The agreement has since been serving as a significant basis for cross-Strait negotiations and peaceful development.
In 2008, the two organizations signed a series of agreements concerning the opening of "three direct links" of cross-Strait mail, trade, air and shipping services, as well as tourism and economic cooperation. They also reached consensus on mainland companies investing in Taiwan.
"All these achievements show that people from both sides have the wisdom and abilities to solve problems, explore cooperation options and create a bright future for the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations through consultations and negotiations," Jia said.

Jia called upon cross-Strait consultations to prioritize issues closely related to the benefits of people from both sides, especially the demands of grassroots residents, small and medium-size companies and young people.
Jia vowed to give more development space for Taiwan companies to stimulate the economy of the island, and said he hoped to push forward cross-Strait cultural and educational exchanges.
"We understand and care about Taiwan compatriots' wills to participate in global activities, and we're willing to make reasonable arrangements through across-Strait consultations," Jia said.
According to Jia, groups and activities advocating "Taiwan independence" are the biggest risk for the peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait, as well as a huge obstacle for cross-Strait consultations and negotiations.
Jia called for resolute opposition against "Taiwan independence" in order to build solid ground for cross-Strait relations.
Also at the meeting, Wang Yi, director of the State Council's Taiwan Affairs Office, stressed that denying or discarding the "1992 consensus" would not only result in a standstill in cross-Strait negotiations but also cause cross-Strait relations to degenerate and harm the interests of people from both sides.
