Some Advice on How to Learn English Well

You may have studied English for five or six years. And many students find it difficult to learn English. Is English really difficult? No, I don’t think so. Maybe English is one of the easiest languages in the world. The reason why you can not master what you have studied is that you didn’t pay much attention to the methods of studying English and didn’t work hard enough at it. Some students often fail in the English exams and feel hopeless about the study of English. Don’t lose heart. As the proverb says, “Failure is the mother of success.”
Now I’ll give you some advice on how to learn English well.
I think the most important thing is to cultivate an interest. Some students don’t like English. That is the problem. But you have to force yourself to read and never give up studying even for a day. By and by you’ll become interested in it.
Speak more. After all these years’ studying of English, you will probably wonder how to further improve your English. When you speak, don’t always translate what you want to say from Chinese into English. If you do, you’ll get mixed up in some usages. For instance, you’ll consider “wait” as a transitive verb, you will never add “to” after “listen”, but you might write “sheeps” for the plural form, though you know you are wrong when the mistakes are pointed out. Therefore, to improve your English, you need to practise your spoken-English. That is to say, you should build up the sense of the English language. Grasp any chance to speak English. When you see a desk, for example, have the word in your mind. When you see a clock, you may tell time to yourself in English. In this way, you’ll be able to learn English with ease and use it with freedom. You’ll be able to tell that “Korea lies to the east of China”, but “Guangzhou lies in the south of China” without thinking hard.
We are leaning English as a foreign language. It is true that we cannot learn it without any grammatical rules. But your sense of grammatical rules comes from constant use of the language. It is unnecessary to write the rules and apply the rules in speaking. In a word, you’ll improve your English only by opening your mouth to practise. Practice makes prefect. Don’t worry. You needn’t be afraid of making mistakes. Even when people speak their native language, they make various kinds of mistakes, which will be rubbed off in the process of learning through practice.
Read more. If you want to have a good command of the English language, you must also read for pleasure some English novels, plays, travel books and so on. And in reading books, the important thing is to try to grasp what the writer is going to tell you. Don’t look up every new word in the dictionary when you come across it or else you can’t enjoy yourself in reading.
Practise writing. You must practise writing in English. You must practise listening, speaking,
reading and writing. At the same time, you must form a good habit of learning English at the very beginning. A good beginning is half done. I hope you’ll all make greater progress during this new school year.
