     occur

  

     happenoccur  都可用于指具体事物的偶然发生。表示人为或碰巧发生只用happen,表示自然发生只用occur。occur还可表示(某想法)出现在脑海中。

 

       1) Fortunately, the accident happened / occurred deep in the night and nobody was on the spot.

(幸运的是,事故发生在深夜,没有人在事故现场。)

            2) When prehistoric man arrived in new parts of the world, something strange happened to the large animals: they suddenly became extinct. 

(当史前的人类到达世界新区域后,奇怪的事情发生在大型动物身:它们突然灭绝了。)

       3) The disease occurs more often in old people than in young people.

(该疾病发生于老年人比发生于年轻人多。)

4) Erosion occurs if a large area of land is cleared of trees and is then badly treated by the farmers.

 (如果大片土地的树木被砍伐,加之农民不良耕作,土地流失就会发生。)

5) Most of these damaging earthquakes occur in a line which extended from Burma to the Alps in Europe.

(这些破坏性地震大部分发生在从缅甸延伸到欧洲的阿尔卑斯山脉上。)

6) This was the idea that first occurred to my mind.

(这是在脑海中首先产生的想法。)

 

 

happen to do sth.

It (so) happens that ………   “碰巧”,其后接动词不定式,或用于句型it happens that 。

 

 1) I happened to meet Mrs. Brown in the street the other day.

  It so happened that I met Mrs. Brown in the street the other day.

 (那天我碰巧在大街上遇到布朗夫人。) 2) It can happen that drivers and pilot, their brains numbed by the monotony of repetitive tasks, fail to take notice of warning lights and signals.

     (司机和飞行员可能碰巧由于单调重复的任务而大脑麻木,未能注意到警告的灯和信号。)

 

      It occurs to sb. that ………   特殊句型,意为“某人想起……”。

        

        1)It suddenly occurred to me that I forget to lock the door when I leave the house.

  (我突然想起我离开房子时忘了锁门。)

        2) It never occurred to the university authority that the incident would create such a great agitation among the students.

    (大学领导根本没有想到这一事件会产生在学中这么大的风潮。)

 

      take place

       come about

    

 take place  具体事物作主语时常可与happen, occur换用,但较多指事情的发生不是偶然出现的,而是按意图、计划进行的。

   

1) The May Fourth Movement took place in 1919.

(五四运动发生于1919年。)

2) Some observers foretold that a new coup would take place in that country.   (一些观察家预言那个国家会发生新的政变。)

 

 come about   多指事情已经发生了,但还不知道为什么,常用于疑问句和否定句。

 

1) How did the accident come about / happen?    (这个事故是怎么发生的?)2) I’ll never understand how it came about that you were an hour late on such a short journey.   (我弄不明白这是怎么一回事,这么短短一段路你竟然晚来了一个小时。)

       

recur “再次发生”、“重新出现”“(往事等)再现”。名词是recurrence。

  

1) If the swelling should recur, please take this medicine immediately.

(如果再出现肿胀症状,请立即服用这种药品。)

       2) The thought of going traveling abroad has often recurred to her mind.     (在她的脑海里常常出现想到国外去旅行的想法。)

3) What we all desire is to prevent the recurrence of these incidents and to ensure the security of the area. 

(我们希望能防止这些事件,确保该地区的安全。)
