    1937年，麦当劳兄弟，哥哥麦克•麦当劳和弟弟戴克•麦当劳在加利福尼亚州（California)一条国道旁开了一家很普通的小吃店。当时正赶上美国开始进入汽车时代，店里的生意很好。1940年，他们将店铺迁移到洛杉矶（Los Angeles）东部80公里的一个繁华住宅区，生意十分红火。经过十年的经营，兄弟俩积累了财富，但他们依然认为应该改变原有的思路和经营模式。他们关闭了经营了十年的餐厅，决定引进自助服务和快速提供食品的方式。与此同时，他们将自己开发并取得成功的体系命名为“快速服务系统”，以特许加盟的方式进行推广，即将食品制作技术和配方、餐厅的设计以及产品销售技巧等传授给加盟商，加盟商交纳一定数额的加盟费。
   
    尽管兄弟俩非常热心于这一模式的推广，但却不热衷于加盟制度的管理和完善。真正使麦当劳在市场上快速发展起来的是麦当劳的一个的加盟商--莱•克罗克先生。克罗克先生是一位奶油冰激凌机推销员，当时，美国市场上开始流行软冰激凌，奶油冰激凌机的销售受到很大影响，恰在此时，他收到了麦当劳公司8台机器的订单，这是他收到的最大订单。出于好奇，他来到了麦当劳餐厅，当时尚未到正午，但是餐厅里三个柜台前排着长队，而且人越来越多，服务员们以每客15秒的速度提供食品。他在感到震惊的同时发现了其中蕴涵着的巨大商机。1961年，克罗克买入麦当劳商标权，开始全力投入麦当劳特许加盟发展模式的研究和开发。他提出QSC（质量、服务、清洁）的经营理念，并将其编写成了具体的指导手册，极大地促进了加盟店的发展和管理。在当时的美国，加盟连锁方式存在着特许商要求加盟商高价购买原材料，总部从中提取价差或中介费和高额加盟费的情况。但克罗克坚信，只有加盟商的成功才会有特许商的繁荣，并采取了一系列服务加盟者的措施和办法。5年后，加盟餐厅超过了250家。
