1930年7月27日午夜，中国工农红军第3军团乘虚攻克长沙城，重创国民党守军何键部。然而在国民党军重兵大举反扑的情况下，红军被迫于8月6日撤出长沙，向平江县转移。

8月20日，朱德、毛泽东率领红1军团在文家市痛歼何键部右路第3纵队戴斗垣部。23日，红1、红3军团会师，组建中国工农红军第一方面军，毛泽东任总政治委员。根据中央的命令，毛泽东、朱德于次日下达了红一方面军分“三路向长沙推进”的命令，第二次进攻长沙。

驻守长沙的是国民党军第四路军总指挥、湖南省清乡司令何键。此人是一个积极反共的刽子手，早在“马日事变”时就双手沾满了革命人民的鲜血。此时，何键在长沙集结了31个团的重兵，依仗坚固的防御工事固守待援。

鉴于红一方面军围攻长沙16天，两次总攻都未奏效，诱歼敌军的计划也未能实现，毛泽东果断决定撤围长沙，向江西吉安进军。

接连遭到红军重创的何键恼羞成怒，在红一方面军撤围长沙后，便进行疯狂的反扑，大肆搜捕、屠杀共产党人。一时间，报纸上连篇累牍地刊登枪毙共产党要犯的消息，腥风血雨又笼罩着闷热的长沙城，白色恐怖之中到处风声鹤唳。

何键对朱毛红军又恨又怕，一面派人到韶山将毛泽东的祖坟挖掉，一面又把罪恶的魔爪伸向了隐蔽在板仓乡下的杨开慧母子。他悬赏大洋1000元，捉拿“毛泽东的妻子杨氏”。

情况越来越紧张，形势越来越险恶。在群众的掩护下，杨开慧带着三个年幼的孩子东躲西藏，不断地变换住处，机敏地躲过了敌人的几次追捕。

10月初，在毛岸英八岁生日的前夕，杨开慧潜回板仓看望母亲，不幸被国民党密探发现。

24日凌晨，杨开慧在家中被捕。

凶残的敌人连八岁的岸英和保姆孙嫂也没放过，把他们同杨开慧一起押到国民党长沙警备司令部。随即又转入长沙陆军监狱，押签上注明：最严重的政治犯，女共党杨开慧一名，附小孩一名，女工一名。

“毛泽东哪里去了？”敌人恶狠狠地逼问。

“不知道！”杨开慧斩钉截铁地回答。

对眼前这个长得文文静静还像个学生似的柔弱女子，敌人以为只要把刑具往她面前一放，她自然会乖乖的招供了。

然而，敌人做梦也没有想到，这个貌似柔弱的女共产党员，竟有着钢铁般的意志。敌人用尽了各种酷刑，把杨开慧折磨得遍体鳞伤，逼她交出地下党名单，交待和毛泽东联系的方法。可杨开慧始终坚贞不屈。狡猾的敌人见用硬的不行，于是又改变了策略。

一天，他们把杨开慧请到客厅坐下，假猩猩地说：

“只要你在报上发表和毛泽东脱离夫妻关系的启事，你就可以马上得到自由。”

敌人得到的只是杨开慧的严词拒绝：

“让我和毛泽东脱离夫妻关系，除非海枯石烂！”
