女娲补天     Nvwa Mended the Sky

Back time in our ancient history,Gonggong,the God of Water and Zhurong, the God of Fire just run into a fight. And Gonggong was defeated at last, who knocked his head over the Mount of Buzhou in the west in result of shame. Since the mount is the pillar supporting the sky, afterwars the mount burst apart, the sky just fell down in half. Cracks sink on the earth, fires broke out in the forests, the unprecedented disaster befallen.

The Goddess of Sky-patching, Nvwa felt painful for the sufferings of human-kind and determined to patch the sky and halt the whole disater. She chose various color of stone and melt them, fill into the hole in the sky. Support the sky with the four feet of a giant tortise. Piles after piles of reed were collected by Nuwa to burn into ash and used to wall up the floods.

Now the human regained their peaceful life. From then on, the sky lean on the north-west, and the sun, together with the moon and stars setting to the west.

Pangu's Creation of Heaven and Earth  Does China have creation stories? The answer is yes, and the name of the first creation God is Pangu.

  In the beginning of time, the universe was unformed and heaven and earth were unseparated. It was like a round egg, in which there was no light, nor sound.

  In the universal egg lied a sleeping giant named Pangu. He slept for 180,000 years. Then one day he woke up. Seeing the emptiness of the universe, he was not too satisfied. In one thought he made a gigantic axe appear. Taking the axe, he broke open the inchoate universal egg.

  The opening created new dynamics. Light matters started to float upward and formed what we now call sky or heaven, and dense matters began to condense into what we now call earth.

  To prevent heaven and earth from collapsing, Pangu held up heaven while standing on earth. He grew three yards taller every day, and with this, the sky became three yards higher and the earth grew three yards thicker by the day.

  Another 180,000 years passed, and the sky became immensely high and the earth solidly thick. Pangu also became as tall as the distance in between.

  Seeing that heaven and earth were well formed and stable, Pangu died. His limbs became mountains, blood turned into rivers, muscles formed the fields, and his skin and hair became myriads of plants and animals. The air he breathed out formed wind and cloud, and his sound became roaring thunders. His left eye became the sun and right eye became the moon; his sweat turned into the morning dew and nurturing rain.

  Using his body, Pangu created a richly beautiful world.

According to Chinese cosmology, in the beginning there was nothing in the universe except formless chaos, but then this chaos began to coalesce into a cosmic egg. Within this, the perfectly opposed principles of yin and yang became balanced and Pangu, the first living thing, emerged from the egg.
Pangu is usually depicted as a primitive hairy giant clad in furs. Pangu set about the task of creating the world: he separated Yin from Yang, creating the Earth and the sky by forcing them apart. The task took eighteen thousand years. Each day the sky grew ten feet higher, the Earth ten feet wider, and Pangu ten feet taller. In some versions of the story, Pangu is aided in this task by the four most fortunate beasts, namely the Dragon, the Qilin, the Phoenix, and the Turtle.

After eighteen thousand years had elapsed, Pangu died. His body became the mountains of the world; his blood, sweat, and tears the oceans and rivers; his eyes the sun and moon; his breath the wind; his voice thunder; his hair forests; and the fleas on his body human beings (although other popular Chinese creation myths say humans were created later either by the Jade Emperor or by the goddess Nuwa).

天地渾沌如雞子，盤古生其中。萬八千歲，天地開辟，陽清為天，陰濁為地。盤古在其中，一日九變，神於天，怪於地。天日高一丈，地日厚一丈，盤古日長一丈。如此萬八千歲，天數極高，地數極深，盤古極長。 《藝文類聚》卷一引《三五歷記》

Kuafu Chased the Sun

It is said that in antiquity a god named KuaFu determined
to have a race with the Sun and catch up with Him. So he
rushed in the direction of the Sun. Finally, he almost ran
neck and neck with the Sun, when he was too thirsty and hot
to continue. Where could he find some water? Just then the
Yellow River and Wei River came into sight, roaring on.
He swooped upon them earnestly and drank the whole river.
But he still felt thirsty and hot, thereupon, he marched
northward for the lakes in the north of China.
Unfortunately, he fell down and died halfway because of thirst.
With his fall, down dropped his cane. Then the cane became
a stretch of peach, green and lush.


And so comes the idiom, KuaFu chased the Sun, which becomes
the trope of man's determination and volition against nature.

Homes are spotless in and out. doors and windows are decorated with brand new Spring Festival couplets. New Year`s pictures. hangings. and images of the Door God. and everyone dresses up in new holiday clothes that are decorated with lucky patterns and auspicious colors.
