显然这两题是考查not…until的强调形式及倒装形式的。答案分别是C和A。
如果将题33）（强调句型）变换成相应的一般句型和倒装句型，同学们会很快找出答案。
Regular radio broadcasts didn’t begin until 1920．
Not until 1920 did regular radio broadcasts begin．
但是如果要求将题38）（倒装句型）变换成相应的一般句型或强调句型，有的同学或许就不清楚该怎么做了。究其原因，就在于题33）中until后面接的是1920，而题38）中until后面接的是一个从句，也就是说句子变复杂了。然而无论un-til后面接什么（单词、短语、从句），until与它们一起构成的都是一个时间状语。既然它是一个时间状语，我们就可以用代数的换元法来将之转换。让我们用符号eq \x(A)来代替题38）中 until后面的成分：Not
until all the fish died in the river did thevillagers realize how serious thepollution was．
Not untileq \x(A) did the villagers realize how serious the pollution was．再将之变成相应的一般句型和强调句型，同学们就会觉得容易些。
The villagers didn’t realize how serious the pollutionwas untileq \x(A)．
It was not untileq \x(A) that that villagers realized how seri-ous the pollution was．
我们再将“eq \x(A)=all the fish died in the river”重新代入上面两句，就得到了上面33、38两题的答案。
当然，我们在实际变换过程中，并不是要像上文那样，机械地按照代数方法去换元，而是说要用这种思维方法来解决问题。事实上，我们应该抓住的关键是无论until后面接什么，until和它们一起都是充当时间状语的，这是共性。正像一元二次方程一样，无论排列得多么杂乱无章，我们都可以将其整理为：Ax2＋Bx＋C=0。因为这是一元二次方程的通式，即共性。在英语学习中，抓住这种共性往往会产生举一反三的效果。
