Tomb Sweeping Day, or Clear Bright Festival (Qing Ming Jie) is a traditional Chinese festival and Taoist holiday, celebrated on the 15th day after the Spring Equinox, or the 1st day of the 5th solar term.

Its Chinese name "Qing Ming" literally means "Clear Brightness," hinting at its importance as a celebration of Spring. Other names for this festival include: Spring Remembrance, Ancestors Day, All Souls Day, Chinese Memorial Day, Tomb Sweeping Day, and the Festival for Tending Graves.

As its names imply, this festival has two main purposes: (1) to celebrate the coming of Spring, and (2) to remember, honor and tend to the graves of deceased ancestors.

Qingming was frequently mentioned in Chinese literature. Among these, the most famous one is probably Du Mu's poem (simply titled "Qingming"):

Traditionally, the family will burn spirit money and paper replicas of material goods such as cars, homes and phones and paper servants. Some other luxury goods like Kweichow Moutai, one of China's top liquor brands, are also popular. According to local reports, a package of three bottles of Moutai with cups costs 8 yuan (US$1.22).

In Chinese culture, it is beleieved that people still need all of those things in the afterlife. Then family members start take turns to kowtow three to nine times (depending on the family adherence to traditional values) before the tomb of the ancestors.

Statistics show that the whole country annually burns almost 1,000 tons of papers around Tomb-sweeping Day. On the day alone, the country's "white waste" is as high as 10 billion yuan (US$1.5 billion), .

Though the time-honored tradition of tomb-sweeping shows no sign of decline, the high-profile promotion of virtual memorials marked this year's Qingming holiday season. Other eco-friendly ways being tested at memorial parks include tying yellow ribbons to trees, placing folded paper cranes in bottles and replacing zhiqian with white chrysanthemum.

In recent years, a growing number of people, particularly the young, have started experimenting with a more convenient and green way to pay tribute online to their ancestors during traditional occasions rather than at gravesites. As China's memorial website adopting 3D technology, the website is dedicated to offering Web surfers a more lifelike and user-friendly online mourning platform.

"Those online cemeteries and memorials offer a place of worship for people who live far away from home or those who are too busy to leave their offices," one said.
