Policeman arrested after road accident kills 5

交通事故致五人死亡，警察被逮捕

A police officer has officially been arrested for killing five people and injuring three more in a road accident in central China.

Wang Yinpeng, head of the police station in a township in Henan province, ran his police van into two street lamp poles on Saturday.

The poles fell, crushing to death four passersby near a bus station and injuring another four at the scene.

One of those injured later died in hospital.

Wang is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol.

The accident has triggered a public outcry on Weibo.com, or Chinese Twitter, after pictures posted showed gruesome scenes after the crash.
Wang could receive the death penalty if convicted.

China to maintain its family planning policy

As the world's population reaches seven billion, China says it will adhere to its family planning policy to maintain a low reproduction rate.
Director of the State Population and Family Planning Commission Li Bin says the policy has alleviated demands in China including education, employment and housing.

Li says thanks to the policy, China's average education term has reached nine years and its population's life expectancy around 74 years. 
In addition, maternal mortality rates and infant mortality rates are among the lowest in all developing countries.

But Li says China is still facing other population-related challenges, including gender imbalance and an aging population.

Also, the rate of higher educated people in the main labor force stands at only 12 percent.

That lags far behind the average level in developed countries.

China welcomes WTO panel ruling on EU's anti-dumping measures

The Chinese central authorities are now applauding a World Trade Organization ruling that rejects the anti-dumping measures imposed by the European Union on Chinese leather shoes.

The Ministry of Commerce is calling on the EU to respect the WTO panel's recommendations and remove penalties.

The WTO panel has told the EU to bring its method on calculating anti-dumping duties into conformity with WTO rules.

It has also determined that the EU anti-dumping moves have violated WTO law.

From 1995 to 2005, the EU controversially imposed a 10-year quota on footwear imports from China.

China's FAW Car reports 49.86 million yuan of net loss in Q3

First Automobile Work shop, or FAW, is reporting a 3rd quarter net loss of some 50-million yuan.

FAW is of one of China's three largest auto makers.

FAW's revenues are down some 25-percent year on year because of slowing sales here in China.

Higher costs are also adding to the company's financial pressure.

The company's net profits have plunged 58-percent year-on-year in the first nine months, and sales are down around 2 percent from a year earlier.
