Question: I am currently unemployed and am looking for a new opportunity.

I have been trying to set up an interview with a company that looks like a great fit for me, but I have not been having any luck.

Answer: Skills, qualifications, and knowledge are definitely important; however, the ability to communicate well with others, demonstrate a positive attitude, and establish good rapport are key attributes.

How you fit within an organization often goes beyond your skills and experience. Here are tips to present yourself in the best possible way.

•Do your homework before the interview. Do your research.

The Internet likely has a wealth of information about the company, the position, and the people you are meeting. Discover ways to build rapport with the interviewing team and show interest in the people and the job.

•Make a good first impression. Dressing professionally provides a favorable first impression and is also a display of respect and courtesy.

Make a strong first impression with your handshake, smile, and eye contact. When speaking, try to maintain a friendly tone, speak slowly and watch your vocabulary and body language.

Typically, you would begin by identifying yourself in terms of educational or professional background. This approach can be a great tool for introducing yourself in networking situations.

•Sell yourself. Face-to face interviews generally work out well because you can meet team members and get a feel the organizational culture.
