Chrysler under fire for Canadian-made cars
- Andrew McKay

Canada's pride could be Detroit's disaster, after an American group accused Chrysler of false advertising.
Chrysler made a big splash last winter when it unveiled its comeback cars and an advertising plan that heavily featured Detroit, the company's birthplace. In a high-profile ad that aired during the Super Bowl, the company debuted its "imported from Detroit" slogan, aimed at positioning the new line of cars favourably against Asian imports.
The problem is, the Chrysler 300, which Chevrolet features prominently in its ads, is actually manufactured in Brampton, Ont. So the Made in the USA Foundation, which exists to promote US-made products, filed a complaint with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission.
The complaint against Chrysler is for its television and print ads for the Chrysler 300, which has a tag line of Imported from Detroit. “The ads are clever, but they are false,” said Joel Joseph, general counsel to the Foundation. “The Chrysler 300 is made in Canada. The Chrysler 300 is assembled in Brampton, Ontario, Canada and often includes a Mexican-made engine. Last time I checked, Detroit is not in Canada. Chrysler is flat wrong to imply the Chrysler 300 is made in the United States and we have asked the FTC to order corrective advertising.”
Chrysler has fired back at the complaint, saying the tagline is just an ad, not a statement of origin, according to the National Post.
“‘Imported from Detroit’ is sort of a fanciful reference, it was never intended as a literal reference,” said Chrysler spokesman Michael Palese. “It’s more of an image and marketing type program.”
The "Imported from Detroit" campaign has been a success for Chrysler, but its seen its share of blowback as well. Environmentalists and anti-corporate screedsdenounced the ads, saying Chrysler was repsonsible for Detroit's decay in the first place, and the expensive adshad been funded on the shoulders of the auto industry's bailout.
Ironically, as the Made in the USA Foundation was going after Chrysler, the company's CEO Sergio Marchionne was in Montreal, espousing the virtues of the company's Canada-US operations.
"In Canada and the United States, we saw the remarkable example of all stakeholders – industry, governments and trade unions – working together to overcome the structural impediments that for too long had been dragging the sector down."
