指發火或憤怒(to be really angry)

例如﹕

The workers are up in arms about closing the factory.

工人對關閉工廠十分不滿。

Many people in Taiwan are prone to be up in arms over some sensitive political issues.

台灣許多人對政治敏感問題容易發火。

The members of the opposition party in Taiwan will be up in arms about one-China policy.

台灣反對黨成員,對一個中國政策表示不滿。

但後接against時,又指武裝鬥爭。例如﹕

During World War II, China was up in arms against Japan.

二次世界大戰時中國與日本交戰。

to be up and coming﹕

指事業前途良好,大有發展(to be successful in career)

例如﹕

If you get along well with others, you are likely to be up and coming in your business.

假如你與他人相處很好,你的生意可能就有發展。

With his pleasing personality and handwork, Mr. A is up and coming.

A先生以他的良好個性和努力,是很有前途的。

I am sure this promising young man will be up and coming is whatever he does.

我相信這位優秀青年,不管做什麼,都會有成就。

(也有寫成﹕to be up-and-coming)

to be(well) up on (something)﹕

對某事物有很多知識(to be very knowledgeable about something)

例如﹕

Mr. Wang is always(well) up on software engineering.

王先生對軟體工程有豐富知識。

Most Ph. Ds will be (well) up on their specialized fields.

大部份博士對他們的專業有很多知識。

Even though Mr. Li is interested in English learning, he may not be (well) up on it any time soon.

李先生雖然喜歡學習英語,但未必很快就能精通。

(well只是加強語氣,可以不用;it 指English learning)

to be under a cloud﹕

抱懷疑態度(to be under suspicion)

例如﹕

As long as you are honest, you will not be under a cloud.

只要你誠實,你就不會受到懷疑。

The reason why Mr. Wang has been under a cloud is still unclear.

王先生受到懷疑的理由還不清楚。

Having been under a cloud for months, Mr. B may face an investigation.

B先生受到幾個月的懷疑,他也許面臨調查。

to be under the weather﹕

指生病,不舒服(not feeling well)

例如﹕

As flu is going around, many people are under the weather.

感冒正在流利,許多人不舒服。

Her husband has been under the weather for a week.

她老公生病一週了。

If you take good care of your health, you will not be often under the weather.

假如你好好照顧自己健康,你就不會常常生病。

Being under the weather, Mr. B asked for a day off.

B先生不舒服,請假一天。

注意﹕這裡就不能用to be under the weather,因為to be = in order to be,句子就不通了。

to be under someone's thumb﹕

受到某人的控制、支配或影響(under a person's control or influence)

例如﹕

Unfortunately, Mrs. Li has been under her husband's thumb for years.

遺憾的是,李太太多年來受到她丈夫的支配。

(thumb通常只用單數 )

Not many people want to be under someone's thumb in their lives.

不是很多人在人生中要受到別人的控制。

If you don't have self-confidence, you will likely be under someone's thumb.

假如你沒有自信,你可能會受到別人的影響。
