1974年1月18日，中共中央转发了由江青主持选编的《林彪与孔孟之道》。全国开展了批林批孔运动。1月24日-25日，江青未经中央政治局讨论，未报告毛泽东的情况下，在北京召开驻京部队和中直机关、国家机关的“批林批孔”动员大会，对周恩来和其他中央领导人发动了突然袭击。毛泽东后来发现江青等人借机进行篡权活动，又对他们作了严厉批评。
本组图选自有关“批林批孔”的上海工人美术作品，由上海人民出版社编辑出版，1975年5月1版1印，10开，印量3万册，内有69幅（或组）画，绝大部分为彩色。
