　　General+Douglas+MacArthur,+I+learned,+often+quoted+Ullman’s+“Youth”+essay+and+kept+a+framed+copy+over+his+desk+throughout+the+Pacific+campaign.+It’s+believed+that+the+Japanese+picked+up+the+work+from+his+Tokyo+headquarters.++

　　Unlikely+as+it+may+sound,+this+essay,+written+more+than+70+years+ago,+is+the+basis+of+many+Japanese+businessmen’s+life+philosophies.+Many+carry+creased+copies+in+their+pockets.+

　　“Anyone+worthy+of+respect+in+Japanese+business+knows+and+uses+this+essay,”+says+one+longtime+Japan+observer.+When+one+of+Ullman’s+grandsons,+Jonas+Rosenfield,+Jr.,+was+having+dinner+in+Japan+a+few+years+ago,+“Youth”+came+up+in+conversation.+Rosenfield+told+his+dinner+companion,+a+Japanese+business+leader,+that+the+author+was+his+grandfather.+The+news+was+shocking.

　　“‘You+are+the+grandson+of+Samuel+Ullman?’+he+kept+repeating,”+says+Rosenfield,+head+of+the+American+Film+Marketing+Association.+“He+couldn’t+get+over1+it.”

　　Then+the+executive+pulled+a+copy+of+“Youth”+from+his+pocket+and+told+Rosenfield,+“I+carry+it+with+me+always.”

　　Several+years+ago,+several+hundred+top+businessmen+and+government+leaders+gathered+in+Tokyo+and+Osaka+to+celebrate+their+admiration+of+Ullman’s+essay.+Konosuke+Matsushita,+founder+of+the+Panasonic+Company,+said+“Youth”+had+been+his+motto+for+20+years.

　　Someone+asked,+“Why+don’t+Americans+love+the+essay+as+much+as+we+do?+It+sends+a+message+about+how+to+live+beautifully+to+men+and+women,+old+and+young+alike.”+

　　Samuel+Ullman+was+born+in+1840+in+Germany+and+came+to+America+as+a+boy.+He+fought+in+the+U.S.+Civil+War+and+settled+in+Birmingham,+Alabama.+He+was+a+hardware+merchant+with+a+great+enthusiasm+for+public+service+that+continues+even+now,+67+years+after+his+death.+In+the+last+few+years+more+than+$36,000+from+Japanese+royalties+on+a+book+and+a+cassette2+reading+of+his+work+has+gone+to+a+University+of+Alabama+at+Birmingham+scholarship+fund.+Not+bad+for+a+man+who+started+writing+in+his+70s.

　　Picture+the+worst+and+best+case+situations—in+all+their+emotional+details—for+not+starting+an+important+task+now.+How+bad+could+the+consequences+be+if+you+don’t+get+it+done+or+done+right?+How+exciting+could+it+be+if+you+did+it+on+time+and+superbly?+What+if+you+intend+to+start+it+later+today?+How+many+things+“beyond+your+control”+can+prevent+you+from+getting+started?+If+you+did,+in+fact,+start+it+right+now,+when+is+the+soonest+you+might+be+done+if+you+get+clear+and+focused,+and+allow+no+other+interruptions+until+you+get+to+a+crucial5+state+of+completion+or+actually+finish+it?++

　　Plan+your+rewards+ahead+of+time.+Diligent+nurse+that+you+are,+don’t+deny+yourself+the+reward+when+you+are+done+by+rushing+onto+the+next+task.+Life+goes+by+too+fast+anyway.+For+example,+when+I+complete+boring+tasksand+not+beforeI+allow+myself+time+to+do+something+that+gives+me+pleasure,+such+as+a+stop+at+a+bookstore+or+time+with+a+friend.+When+I+finish+a+big+important+task+I+give+myself+a+bigger+reward+such+as+a+trip+or+new+outfit.

　　Sidelong+Glancing+at+It

　　Sometimes+facing+a+task+straight+on+just+makes+you+freeze.+Try+to+picture+how+to+do+it+by+“sidelong+glancing”,+that+is+getting+small+glimpses+out+of+the+corner+of+your+mental+eye+about+how+you+can+most+easily+do+the+task.+One+of+the+best+ways+is+to+literally+get+moving+and+looking+around.+In+times+of+mindblocks,+anger+or+tension,+men+tend+to+act+out+more+while+women+tend+to+shut+down,+moving+less,+You+will+be+more+aware+of+your+emotions+and+motivations+when+you+get+into+motion.+Consider+walking,+showering,+eating+or+otherwise+being+“on+your+way”+to+doing+the+task.+You+will+let+your+mind+go+naturally+free.+++

　　This+sounded+interesting.+“What+else+is+on+the+list?”+I+asked.

　　“I+don’t+know,”+he+said.+“It+reveals+a+lot+about+me.+Write+your+own+list,+and+you’ll+see+what+I+mean.”++

　　So+that+night+I+did+just+that,+and+he+was+right.+The+list+revealed+a+whole+lot+about+what+was+important+to+me.++

　　Just+writing+the+list+helped+me+sort+through+priorities.+I+filled+up+the+first+20+blanks+quickly,+but+then+began+to+think+carefully.+Eventually+I+added+items+I’ve+thought+about+for+years,+dreams+I’ve+carried+with+me+since+I+was+young,+and+things+that+resonated+when+I+first+heard+about+them.+When+I+reviewed+the+list+later,+some+entries+surprised+me.

　　First,+I+want+to+travel+much+more,+particularly+now+that+my+children+are+older+and+can+go+with+me+to+see+the+world.+There+are+ten+trips+I+would+like+to+make+with+the+boys—from+biking+through+Denmark+to+camping+in+the+Canadian+Rockies.

　　I+also+was+surprised+to+find+some+things+on+the+list+that+need+to+be+done+soon.+If+I’m+going+to+learn+to+Rollerblade,+for+instance,+I’d+better+start+before+I+turn+50.

　　Some+items,+though,+I+can+put+off+until+I’m+older.+I+would+love+to+grow+flowers,+to+really+garden,+but+while+I’m+raising+kids+and+working,+I+don’t+have+time+for+roses.

　　I+would+love+to+do+volunteer+work+in+a+hospital+nursery+someday,+rocking+crying+infants+and+giving+them+their+first+baths.+I+would+like+to+work+with+teenagers,+leading+youth+groups+or+helping+at+the+local+high+school.+If+I’m+going+to+do+these,+though,+I+may+need+to+reconsider+running+the+bake+sale+for+the+school+fair+each+year.

　　A+few+of+the+items+are+intimidating+because+they+mean+a+serious+commitment+of+some+sort.+I+would+like+to+publish+a+novel+before+I+die,+and+I+would+like+to+get+a+Ph.D.+in+English+literature.+I+also+would+like+to+learn+to+draw+and+play+piano+with+a+string+quartet.+If+I’m+going+to+accomplish+these+things,+I+need+to+start+writing+every+day+and+polishing+my+piano+skills.

　　I+may+not+make+it+through+the+list.+Some+things+may+just+be+out+of+reach,+such+as+New+Zealand,+and+others+ultimately+may+not+work+with+the+rest+of+my+life,+such+as+owning+a+horse.+Yet+I+see+that+I+already+have+built+the+framework+for+many+of+these+pipe+dreams,+and+that+if+I+make+them+goals+today,+there+is+no+reason+I+can’t+find+a+way+to+taste+at+least+part+of+that+reality+tomorrow.

　　Like+my+friend,+I+now+have+an+alternative+to+complaining.+When+I’m+bored+with+my+life,+I+take+out+my+list.+Maybe+I’ll+send+off+for+travel+brochures+or+take+my+pencils+out+in+the+back+yard+and+doodle+around+for+an+hour,+trying+to+sketch+trees+that+look+like+trees.++

　　A+recent+experience+retaught+me+this+truth.+I+was+hospitalized+following+a+severe+heart+attack+and+had+been+in+intensive+care+for+several+days.+It+was+not+a+pleasant+place.+

　　One+morning,+I+had+to+have+some+additional+tests.+The+required+machines+were+located+in+a+building+at+the+opposite+end+of+the+hospital,+so+I+had+to+be+wheeled+across+the+courtyard+on+a+gurney.+

　　As+we+emerged+from+our+unit,+the+sunlight+hit+me.+That’s+all+there+was+to+my+experience.+Just+the+light+of+the+sun.++And+yet+how+beautiful+it+was—how+warming,+how+sparkling,+how+brilliant!

　　I+looked+to+see+whether+anyone+else+realized+the+sun’s+golden+glow,+but+everyone+was+hurrying+to+and+fro,+most+with+eyes+fixed+on+the+ground.+Then+I+remembered+how+often+I,+too,+had+been+indifferent+to+the+grandeur+of+each+day,+too+preoccupied2+with+petty+and+sometimes+even+mean+concerns+to+respond+to+the+splendor+of+it+all.

　　Hold+fast+to+life,+but+not+so+fast+that+you+cannot+let+go.+This+is+the+second+side+of+life’s+coin,+the+opposite+pole+of+its+paradox:+we+must+accept+our+losses,+and+learn+how+to+let+go.+

　　But+why+should+we+be+reconciled4+to+life’s+contradictory+demands?+Why+fashion+things+of+beauty+is+evanescent5+?+Why+give+our+heart+in+love+when+those+we+love+will+ultimately+be+torn+from+our+grasp?

　　In+order+to+resolve+this+paradox,+we+must+seek+a+wider+perspective,+viewing+our+lives+as+through+windows+that+open+on+eternity.+Once+we+do+that,+we+realize+that+though+our+lives+are+finite,+our+deeds+on+earth+weave+a+timeless+pattern.

　　Life+is+never+just+being.+It+is+a+becoming,+a+relentless+flowing+on.+Our+parents+live+on+through+us,+and+we+will+live+on+through+our+children.+The+institutions+we+build+endure,+and+we+will+endure+through+them.+The+beauty+we+fashion+cannot+be+dimmed+by+death.+Our+flesh+may+perish,+our+hands+will+wither,+but+that+which+they+create+in+beauty+and+goodness+and+truth+lives+on+for+all+time+to+come.

　　然而，生活中的我还履行着另外一套附加的法则，即经验法则。这一法则虽然简单，但却能使事情顺利地进行下去。

　　父母把我送到一所很好的学校学习，但养育了7个孩子，才是他们为我的教育做的最好的事。我是家中长女，而弟弟妹妹就是我最好的老师。

　　爱自己是件很困难的事，这真是一种奇怪的现象!或许有人以为这是世界上最容易的事，因为我们始终都在关心自己。我们总对能获得多少，表现多好，如何舒适地生活怀有极大的兴趣。那为何真正地爱自己就那么难呢?

　　当然，爱自己并不意味着放纵自己。很多人都没有真正地爱过自己，他们知道，许多东西并不是自己渴望就能得到。每个人都有很多想法，有不同反应和好恶。他们会认为：没有这些，他们会更快乐。当一个人肯定自己某些方面而厌恶其他方面时，他就做出了判断。于是，我们对自身不满的方面被压制下去，不想去了解，也不想承认它的存在。这是非常有碍自己成长的方式。

　　It’s+a+strange+phenomenon+how+difficult+people+find+it+to+love+themselves.+One+would+think+it+is+the+easiest+thing+in+the+world,+because+we’re+constantly+concerned+with+ourselves.+We’re+always+interested+in+how+much+we+can+get,+how+well+we+can+perform,+how+comfortable+we+can+be.+So+with+all+that,+why+is+it+so+difficult+to+actually+love+oneself?

　　Loving+oneself+certainly+doesn’t+mean+indulging+oneself.+Really+loving+is+an+attitude+towards+oneself+that+most+people+don’t+have,+because+they+know+quite+a+few+things+about+themselves+which+are+not+desirable.+Everybody+has+innumerable+attitudes,+reactions,+likes+and+dislikes+which+they’d+be+better+off+without.+Judgment+is+made+and+while+one+likes+one’s+positive+attitudes,+one+dislikes+the+others.+With+that+comes+suppression+of+those+aspects+of+oneself+that+one+is+not+pleased+with.+One+doesn’t+want+to+know+about+them+and+doesn’t+acknowledge+them.+That’s+one+way+of+dealing+with+oneself,+which+is+detrimental+to+growth.

　　Another+unskillful+way+is+to+dislike+that+part+of+oneself+which+appears+negative+and+every+time+it+arises+one+blames+oneself,+which+makes+matters+twice+as+bad+as+they+were+before.+With+that+comes+fear+and+very+often+aggression.+If+one+wants+to+deal+with+oneself+in+a+balanced+way,+it’s+not+useful+to+pretend+that+the+unpleasant+part+doesn’t+exist,+those+aggressive,+irritable,+sensual,+conceited+tendencies.+If+we+pretend+we+are+far+from+reality+and+put+a+split+into+ourselves.+Even+though+such+a+person+may+be+totally+sane,+the+appearance+given+is+that+of+not+being+quite+real.+We’ve+all+come+across+people+like+that,+who+are+too+sweet+to+be+true,+as+a+result+of+pretense+and+suppression.+Blaming+oneself+doesn’t+work+either.+In+both+instances+one+transfers+one’s+own+reactions+to+other+people.+One+blames+others+for+their+deficiencies,+real+or+imagined,+or+one+doesn’t+see+them+as+ordinary+human+beings.+Everyone+lives+in+an+unreal+world,+because+it’s+egodeluded,+but+this+one+is+particularly+unreal,+because+everything+is+considered+either+as+perfectly+wonderful+or+absolutely+terrible.

　　The+only+thing+that+is+real+is+that+we+have+six+roots+within+us.+Three+roots+of+good+and+three+roots+of+evil.+The+latter+are+greed,+hate+and+delusion,+but+we+also+have+their+opposites:+generosity,+lovingkindness+and+wisdom.+Take+an+interest+in+this+matter.+If+one+investigates+this+and+doesn’t+get+anxious+about+it,+then+one+can+easily+accept+these+six+roots+in+everybody.+No+difficulty+at+all,+when+one+has+seen+them+in+oneself.+They+are+the+underlying+roots+of+everyone’s+behavior.+Then+we+can+look+at+ourselves+a+little+more+realistically,+namely+not+blaming+ourselves+for+the+unwholesome+roots,+not+patting+ourselves+on+the+back+for+the+wholesome+ones,+but+rather+accepting+their+existence+within+us.+We+can+also+accept+others+more+clearsightedly+and+have+a+much+easier+time+relating+to+them.

　　We+will+not+suffer+from+disappointments+and+we+won’t+blame,+because+we+won’t+live+in+a+world+where+only+black+or+white+exists,+either+the+three+roots+of+unwholesomeness+or+their+opposites.+Such+a+world+doesn’t+exist+anywhere,+and+the+only+person+to+be+like+that+is+an+Arahant.+It’s+largely+a+matter+of+degree+in+everyone+else.+These+degrees+of+good+and+evil+are+so+finely+tuned,+there’s+so+little+difference+within+the+degrees+in+each+one+of+us+that+it+really+doesn’t+matter.+Everybody+has+the+same+job+to+do,+to+cultivate+the+wholesome+tendencies+and+uproot+the+unwholesome+ones.

　　Apparently+we’re+all+very+different.+That+too+is+an+illusion.+We’re+all+having+the+same+problems+and+also+the+same+faculties+to+deal+with+them.+The+only+difference+is+the+length+of+training+that+one+has+had.+Training+which+may+have+been+going+on+for+a+number+of+lifetimes+has+brought+about+a+little+more+clarity,+that’s+all.

　　Clarity+of+thinking+comes+from+purification+of+one’s+emotions,+which+is+a+difficult+job+that+needs+to+be+done.+But+it+can+only+be+done+successfully+when+it+isn’t+an+emotional+upheaval,+but+clear+cut,+straightforward+work+that+one+does+on+oneself.+When+it+is+considered+to+be+just+that,+it+takes+the+sting+out+of+it.+The+charge+of+“I’m+so+wonderful”+or+“I’m+so+terrible”+is+defused.+We+are+neither+wonderful+nor+terrible.+Everyone+is+a+human+being+with+all+the+potential+and+all+the+obstructions.+If+one+can+love+that+human+being,+the+one+that+is+“me”+with+all+its+faculties+and+tendencies,+then+one+can+love+others+realistically,+usefully+and+helpfully.+But+if+one+makes+a+break+in+the+middle+and+loves+the+part+which+is+nice+and+dislikes+the+part+which+isn’t+nice+enough,+one’s+never+going+to+come+to+grips+with+reality.+

　　If+we+look+at+ourselves+in+that+manner,+we+will+learn+to+love+ourselves+in+a+wholesome+way.+“Just+as+a+mother+at+the+risk+of+life,+loves+and+protects+her+child...”+Become+your+own+mother!+If+we+want+to+have+a+relationship+with+ourselves+that+is+realistic+and+conducive+to+growth,+then+we+need+to+become+our+own+mother.+A+sensible+mother+can+distinguish+between+that+which+is+useful+for+her+child+and+that+which+is+detrimental.+But+she+doesn’t+stop+loving+the+child+when+it+misbehaves.+This+may+be+the+most+important+aspect+to+look+at+in+ourselves.+Everyone,+at+one+time+or+another,+misbehaves+in+thought+or+speech+or+action.+Most+frequently+in+thought,+fairly+frequently+in+speech+and+not+so+often+in+action.+So+what+do+we+do+with+that?+What+does+a+mother+do?+She+tells+the+child+not+to+do+it+again,+loves+the+child+as+much+as+she’s+always+loved+it+and+just+gets+on+with+the+job+of+bringing+up+her+child.+Maybe+we+can+start+to+bring+up+ourselves.

　　The+whole+of+this+training+is+a+matter+of+maturing.+Maturity+is+wisdom,+which+is+unfortunately+not+connected+to+age.+If+it+were,+it+would+be+very+easy.+One+would+have+a+guarantee.+Since+it+is+hard+work,+a+job+to+be+done.+First+comes+recognition,+then+learning+not+to+condemn,+but+to+understand:+“This+is+the+way+it+is.”+The+third+step+is+change.+Recognition+may+be+the+hardest+part+for+most+people;+it’s+not+easy+to+see+what+goes+on+inside+of+oneself.+This+is+the+most+important+and+the+most+interesting+aspect+of+contemplation.

　　We+lead+a+contemplative+life,+but+that+does+not+mean+we+sit+in+meditation+all+day+long.+A+contemplative+life+means+that+one+considers+every+aspect+of+what+happens+as+part+of+a+learning+experience.+One+remains+introspective+under+all+circumstances.+When+one+becomes+outgoing,+one+goes+to+the+world+with+one’s+thoughts,+speech+and+action.+One+needs+to+recollect+oneself+and+return+within.+In+our+way+it’s+a+combination+of+meditation+and+lifestyle.+The+contemplative+life+goes+on+inside+of+oneself.+One+can+do+the+same+thing+with+or+without+recollection.+Contemplation+is+the+most+important+aspect+of+introspection.+It+isn’t+necessary+to+sit+still+all+day+and+watch+one’s+breath.+Every+move,+every+thought,+every+word+can+give+rise+to+understanding+oneself.

　　This+kind+of+work+on+oneself+will+bring+about+deep+inner+security,+which+is+rooted+in+reality.+Most+people+are+wishing+and+hoping+for+this+kind+of+security,+but+are+not+even+able+to+voice+their+longing.+Living+in+a+myth,+constantly+hoping+or+being+afraid+is+opposed+to+having+inner+strength.+The+feeling+of+security+arises+when+one+sees+reality+inside+of+oneself+and+thereby+the+reality+in+everyone+else+and+comes+to+terms+with+it.

　　The+contemplative+life+is+often+lived+heavyhandedly.+A+certain+lack+of+joy+is+compensated+for+by+being+outgoing.+This+doesn’t+work.+One+should+cultivate+certain+lightheartedness,+but+stay+within+oneself.+There’s+nothing+to+be+worried+or+fearful+about,+nothing+that+is+too+difficult.+So+we+need+a+lighthearted+approach+to+our+own+difficulties+and+those+of+everyone+else,+but+not+exuberance+and+outpouring.+Rather+a+constant+inwardness,+which+contains+a+bit+of+amusement.+This+works+best.+If+one+has+a+sense+of+humor+about+oneself,+it+is+much+easier+to+love+oneself+properly.+It’s+also+much+easier+to+love+everybody+else.

　　We+sometimes+think+we+can+portray+something+we+are+not.+That+is+not+possible.+People+generally+try+to+show+themselves+off+as+something+better+than+they+really+are.+Then,+of+course,+they+become+disappointed+in+themselves+when+they+fail,+and+equally+disappointed+in+others.+To+realistically+know+oneself+makes+it+possible+to+truly+love.+That+kind+of+feeling+gives+the+lightheartedness+to+this+job+in+which+we’re+engaged,+which+is+needed.+By+accepting+ourselves+and+others+as+we+truly+are,+our+job+of+purification,+chipping+away+at+the+defilements,+is+made+much+easier.

　　生活不是上帝为了责备我们的失败而设的圈套。生活也不是拼写比赛，无论你答对多少词，只要拼错一个，就丧失了比赛资格。生活更如棒球季候赛，最佳球队也许会输掉比赛三分之一的分数，而最差的球队也会有光辉灿烂的一天。我们的目标就是赢多输少。

　　很久以前，一个圆失去了一角。圆想做回完整的自己，于是四处寻找那遗失的一角。但它不再是一个整圆，因此只能慢慢地滚动。它在和煦的阳光下，欣赏着路边鲜艳的花儿，与虫儿聊着天。它遇到了许多不同的角，但都不适合自己，于是将它们扔在路边，继续寻找。最终，它发现了一片最合适自己的角，兴奋不已。现在它是一个完整的圆了，不再残缺不全。它与那一角组合在一起开始滚动。它现在是一个完美的圆，因此能够快速地滚动，快到无法再欣赏美丽的花儿，不能与虫儿聊天了。当它明白速度提高之后的世界是多么不同时，它停了下来，将那一角扔在了路旁，缓慢地离开了。

　　我认为，这个故事告诉了我们，从一种不同以往的意义上来讲，缺憾也是一种完整。拥有一切的人在某些方面却是贫穷无比。他永远无法知道何为向往与期盼，也不懂得用更好的梦想来滋润他的心灵。

　　一个人的完整在于他能为自己的极限让步，有足够的勇气放弃超乎现实的梦想，且并不因此灰心沮丧。一个男人和一个女人的完整在于他或她能坚强地走过困境，可以在失去亲人后依然能保持完整。

　　Once+a+circle+missed+a+wedge1.+The+circle+wanted+to+be+whole,+so+it+went+around+looking+for+its+missing+piece.+But+because+it+was+incomplete+and+therefore+could+roll+only+very+slowly,+it+admired+the+flowers+along+the+way.+It+chatted+with+worms.+It+enjoyed+the+sunshine.+It+found+lots+of+different+pieces,+but+none+of+them+fit.+So+it+left+them+all+by+the+side+of+the+road+and+kept+on+searching.+Then+one+day+the+circle+found+a+piece+that+fit+perfectly.+It+was+so+happy.+Now+it+could+be+whole,+with+nothing+missing.+It+incorporated2+the+missing+piece+into+itself+and+began+to+roll.+Now+that+it+was+a+perfect+circle,+it+could+roll+very+fast,+too+fast+to+notice+the+flowers+or+talk+to+the+worms.+When+it+realized+how+different+the+world+seemed+when+it+rolled+so+quickly,+it+stopped,+left+its+found+piece+by+the+side+of+the+road+and+rolled+slowly+away.

　　The+lesson+of+the+story,+I+suggested,+was+that+in+some+strange+sense+we+are+more+whole+when+we+are+missing+something.+The+man+who+has+everything+is+in+some+ways+a+poor+man.+He+will+never+know+what+it+feels+like+to+yearn3,+to+hope,+to+nourish+his+soul+with+the+dream+of+something+better.

　　+There+is+a+wholeness+about+the+person+who+has+come+to+terms+with+his+limitations,+who+has+been+brave+enough+to+let+go+of+his+unrealistic+dreams+and+not+feel+like+a+failure+for+doing+so.+There+is+a+wholeness+about+the+man+or+woman+who+has+learned+that+he+or+she+is+strong+enough+to+go+through+a+tragedy+and+survive,+he+or+she+can+lose+someone+and+still+feel+like+a+complete+person.

　　Life+is+not+a+trap+set+for+us+by+god+so+that+he+can+condemn4+us+for+failing.+Life+is+not+a+spelling+bee,+where+no+matter+how+many+words+you’ve+gotten+right;+you’re+disqualified+if+you+make+one+mistake.+Life+is+more+like+a+baseball+season,+where+even+the+best+team+loses+onethird+of+its+games+and+even+the+worst+team+has+its+days+of+brilliance.+Our+goal+is+to+win+more+games+than+we+lose.

　　When+we+accept+that+imperfection+is+part+of+being+human,+and+when+we+can+continue+rolling+through+life+and+appreciate+it,+we+will+have+achieved+a+wholeness+that+others+can+only+aspire+to.+That,+I+believe,+is+what+god+asks+of+us—not“be+perfect”,+not+“don’t+even+make+a+mistake”,+but+“be+whole”.

　　If+we+are+brave+enough+to+love,+tolerable5+enough+to+forgive,+generous+enough+to+rejoice+in+another’s+happiness,+and+wise+enough+to+know+there+is+enough+love+to+go+around+for+us+all,+then+we+can+achieve+a+fulfillment+that+no+other+living+creature+will+ever+know.');
