Paper Lifecycle from Submission to Publication

Once you have fully submitted your paper to a journal through EES (Elsevier Editorial System) it will show a status of Submitted to Journal. You can monitor the status of the submission by logging back onto the EES site for the journal and viewing the submission status from your EES Author Main Menu.

The Submission Process:

·       Once a submitted paper is assigned to a journal Editor for handling it is given a unique manuscript reference number. You will be informed via e-mail notification of the manuscript reference number once available. The status of the paper in EES changes to With Editor.

·       For some journals a Managing Editor or Editorial Office may invite an Editor to handle a paper. In such case the status of the paper in EES is displayed as Editor Invited until the invited Editor accepts the assignment as handling Editor.

·       The handling Editor will then invite Reviewers to perform an independent review of the paper. It is journal policy to use peer review so that we can offer Authors the best possible advice on their submissions.

·       Because Reviewers are invariably busy this can regrettably lead to delays in assessing papers and providing a decision for some papers. Consequently peer review times vary per journal. However the Editor will endeavor to send you a decision as soon as possible.

NOTE: For information on average review times for particular journals, you must contact the Editor or Editorial Office directly. During the peer review process, your paper will show a status of Under Review.

·       Once the Editor handling your submission has received completed reviews on your submitted paper the status changes to Required Reviews Complete.

·        If the Editor has registered his decision in the system but has not yet sent you the e-mail confirming the decision, the status of your paper will be listed as Decision in Process. The Editor will contact you directly with the editorial decision, his comments and those of the Reviewers.

·        If the Editor requests revisions to be made to the paper, this must be done through EES and the revised paper re-submitted to the journal. For details on how to submit a revised paper click here.

·        Accepted papers are sent to our Production Department once the Editor has made a final decision of Accept. The status of your paper in EES will change to Completed - Accept.

Accepted Papers in Production:

·       Once your paper is accepted for publication in the journal it is forwarded to us by the journal editor. It is entered into our production tracking system and you will receive an acknowledgement letter containing the production reference number (Our Reference), together with an offprint order form and a journal publishing agreement form.

·       Once your article is recorded in our tracking system, you can use your production reference number along with the Corresponding Author's name to add your paper to your personal homepage on http://www.elsevier.com/trackarticle. For information on how to track your accepted paper click here.

·     Please note that the reference number, which we assign to your accepted paper, which you can use to track your accepted article through the production process, is different to the editorial reference number assigned by the Editor when your paper was submitted. Our online Track your Accepted Paper tool only tracks the status of articles which have been accepted for publication and have been entered into our Production Tracking System.

Acceptance to Publication:

·        Accepted papers for a journal are then typeset in the exact style of the journal.

·       The typeset proofs are sent to the designated Corresponding Author of the paper in PDF file format via e-mail.

·        Once corrected proofs are returned by the Corresponding Author, the paper is type  set again incorporating the changes made.

·     The paper is now ready to be compiled into an issue of the journal.
