How can we help blind people/homeless people/deaf people…?
●For people in wheelchairs, wide sidewalks, ramps and automatic doors are helpful.
●For poor people, education programmes that allow them to get better jobs are helpful. Free medical care and affordable housing are also helpful.
●Blind people can benefit from Braille signs, spoken announcements rather than written notices, contoured pavements and unobstructed sidewalks.
●Elderly people can benefit from public transit that is easy to board, places to sit down outdoors and escalators or lifts instead of stairs.
●For homeless people, shelters and kitchens can offer short-term help.
●Deaf people can benefit from written notices and a greater awareness of sign language.
Make a similar conversation like this.
A: How can we help the poor?
B: we can help them become rich.
A: What about the elderly?
B: We can look after them after school in their homes.

You are to make a list of things you would find most difficult to do or you would miss if you were blind, deaf, elderly, homeless, physically disabled or poor.
Make sure that you write a few sentences about a person who suffers from any of the conditions shown in the pictures. Write your sentences from that person’s viewpoints.

What do you know about ‘charity walk’ in Hong Kong?

Read the text on page 94 and then answer the following questions:
What is the famous charity walk called? (Oxfam Trailwalker )
Which oorganization organizes the event? (Oxfam Hong Kong )
Why do we call it ‘Trailwalker’? (Because people have to walk a 100-kilometer trail without sleep.)
Can you finish such a walk? Why not? (It’s a difficult/tough hike.)

Teaching procedures
Step 1 Presenting compounds
Hello, class. Look at words ‘homework’, ‘football’ and ‘bedroom’ here. They are formed by putting two smaller words together. Could you draw a line between the two parts of each word? Could you see the two individual words like ‘home’ ‘work’ that make up the compounds?
Step 2 Finishing Part A
Now go on to complete the exercises in Part A on page 98 by combining the words to make compounds. Remember you will have to use hyphens in some cases.
Step 3 Finishing Part B
It’s a good way to remember some compound words by separating them into two parts. Now help Lily to divide the words into two parts on page 98 in Part B.
Step 4 Playing a game
I will divide the class into two teams. I will give each team an equal number of divided words and ask you to reassemble them to make compound words. The first team to assemble all their words correctly is the winner.

Step 1 Presenting the structure
What do you think of ‘Trailwalker’? Is it tough? If you want to join it, you must have strong bodies. So it’s necessary that you start training a few months before the walk.
We use ‘It is + adjective + that’ structure to say how we feel about something.
It is clear ( obvious, true, possible, certain....) that .....
该句型中it 是形式主语,真正的主语是that 引导的主语从句,常译为“清楚(显然,真的,肯定……)” 是主语从句最常见的一种结构。   
It is very clear that he’ s round and tall like a tree.   
= That he’s round and tall like a tree is very clear.
4. It is important (necessary, right, strange, natural...) that ...
该句型和上一个同属一个句型。由于主句中的形容词不同,that 后的从句中要用虚拟语气(should + 动词原形),should 可以省去。建议记住该句型中的形容词。

Step 1 Presenting the structure of “It is + 形容词 + of sb. to do sth.”和“It is + 形容词 + for sb. to do sth.”
In the text on page 94 there is a sentence: It is necessary for you to support and help each other before and during the event.
“It is + 形容词 + of sb. to do sth.”和“It is + 形容词 + for sb. to do sth.”这两个句型使用频率都很高,前者表示说话人对客观事物的高兴、惊讶、遗憾、难过等情绪,表现的是人的性格、品质或特征,经常可以转换成:
①        How + 形容词 + it is + of sb. to do sth.!
②        How + 形容词 + of sb. to do sth.!
③        Sb. + is + 形容词 + to do sth..或
④        That is + 形容词 + of sb. to do sth.等;
后者表示说话人对客观事件的决断性,根据具体情况可以转换成:

②        It is + 形容词 + that 从句;

Period 8 Study skills (Pronunciation: /w/ and /v/)
Teaching goals
●  To recognize the difference between the /w/ sound and the /v/ sound
●  To pronounce the /w/ sound and the /v/ sound correctly

Step 1 Doing warm-up activity
Look at and read the tongue twisters on the board.
●While we were walking, we were watching window washers wash William’s windows with warm washing water.
●Which watches are Swiss watches?
●Which witch wished which wicked wish?
●Vincent visits Eva every Wednesday.
●Who washed William’s white woolen underwear when William’s washer woman went west?
●‘Television’ is a word with five words.
Step 2 Presenting
Now go over the twisters to find /w/ and /v/ sounds in the sentences.
When we make the /w/ sound, we should push our lips forward and make our mouths rounded. When we make the /v/ sound, we should touch our top teeth to our bottom lips and our throats.
Look at me and try to say these sounds as I do.
Step 3 Practicing
I am to play the recording for Part A and Part B. You are to repeat the words, making sure you pronounce the /w/ and /v/ sounds correctly in each one.
In Part C, you will hear both the /w/ and the /v/ sounds. Look at the words first, and then listen to the recording. Repeat the words.
Now I shall ask a few students to say the pairs of words to the class.
Next I shall play the recording for Part D and you are to read aloud at the same tiem.

After class some of the best ones will be put up on the wall for reference and comment.

Walk for Poor Student is a charity event to raise money. I hope my classmates will join me. It’s meaningful to take part in a charity activity. In 1638, John Harvard donated some money and about four hundred books to a new university. This was the beginning of the library at Harvard University. The gift was so important that the university was named for John Harvard.
