爸爸自己生活简朴，但对他人，无论是衣服，还是钱财，只要对方需要，爸爸都会送给他的。

爸爸这点倒很像我的奶奶。爸爸从小对人就有同情心。当年在老家的桥头湾、井湾里等地读私塾时，有一个名叫黑皮伢子的小同学，他家里很穷，常常不带中午饭到校，到晚上再回家吃晚饭。我爸爸知道后，就把自己从家里带来的午饭分出一半给他吃。午休时还常帮助他捡柴。这事让奶奶知道了，她每天给爸爸带午饭时就特意多装上些，让他们俩都吃饱饭。

后来，爸爸到长沙第一师范上学。有一年的冬天，在去长沙的路上，遇到一个穷苦的青年，爸爸见那青年在风雪天里还只穿着单衣，冻得浑身直打颤，就和他谈起来，从谈话中爸爸知道他家境贫寒，是生活所迫，才外出谋生的。爸爸很同情他，就把自己的一件上衣脱下来送给他。那青年很感激爸爸。学校放假回家后，奶奶发现爸爸的上衣少了一件，就问爸爸，爸爸把事情如实地告诉了奶奶，奶奶只是笑笑，没有责怪爸爸。

爸爸关心群众的事是很多的

1927年的冬季，井冈山上大雪纷飞，寒风刺骨。爸爸的房东谢槐福，大冬天身上无防寒抵风的棉衣，只穿着一件破破烂烂的单衣，在寒风中冻得直抖。

爸爸看在眼里，痛在心上，就走过来，轻轻地拍拍他的肩头，亲切地说：“槐福呀，天冷了，你要穿衣服哩！”谢槐福回过头来看看我爸爸，便实话实说：“毛委员，我没有衣服呀！”

爸爸听了，马上把自己身上刚刚发的一件棉衣脱下来，披在谢槐福的身上，告诉他说：“外面正在下雪，槐福，你穿上吧。”

“毛委员，你身上只穿两件单衣，我怎么能穿你的棉衣哩！”谢槐福说着又把衣服递给爸爸。

“你莫担心我口罗，我不怕冷，我习惯了。”爸爸说着又把棉衣给他穿上，还亲自给他扣好扣子。

在长征途中有一天，正遇上阴天，天昏地暗，部队行进很困难，这时恰恰又遇上国民党的飞机。突然，敌机投下一颗炸弹，不偏不倚在警卫班长身边“轰”的一声爆炸了，班长倒在了血泊中。爸爸哭了，在场的人都哭了。爸爸慢慢地举手摘下红星帽，默默地站在警卫班长的遗体旁，不说一句话地站了很久，很久。

大家含着泪水，掩埋了战友，又继续上路。突然间，爸爸又返了回去，从一个战士的手里拿过一把小小的工兵铁锹，又一次为警卫班长的坟培土。爸爸一锹又一锹地把土培在高高的坟堆上，又沉重地用铁锹拍打拍打。爸爸站起来，深情地望着这座新坟。很久他才拖着沉重的步子，一步一回头地缓缓地离开，他又带着队伍继续长征。

1934年12月下旬，爸爸和红军从黎平向黄平行军时，在一个村边见到一个农村妇女，躺倒在路边上，奄奄一息了。爸爸走上前问清楚了，原来她是当地的农村人。爸爸毫不犹豫地从自己身上脱下一件毛线衣，给她穿上，从自己的行李中拿出一条布被单子，又让警卫员拿了两条装满粮食的干粮袋，一起都送给她。这位老乡有了活命粮，暖身衣服，她含泪连声对爸爸道谢。
