Taiwan presidential debate: PFP’s Soong appeals to middle voters  Soong repeated his care for the middle class and medium-sized enterprises throughout the debate, and concluded by stressing his focus on education and social welfare if he is elected.

“Statistics are cold, it is the people that matters,” said Soong, referring to the economic results President Ma Ying-jeou claimed he achieved during his three years in office.

Touching on the cross-strait relationship, Soong emphasized peaceful dialogue.

Against the widening poverty gap, he put tax reforms, education and social welfare system reforms as solutions.

He criticized the overemphasis on competitiveness in the education system by quoting a worried mother. “Children are losing the ability to feel and empathize, they grow up knowing only how to step on others.”

Soong also criticized the KMT and DPP’s lack of efficiency and execution regarding electricity and internet infrastructure. He proposed legislation to promote solar energy and higher internet speed.

“The Three Ms: The middle class, the middle voter and the medium-sized enterprises are the most important,” Soong stressed, as he appealed to voters supporting neither the KMT’s Ma Ying-jeou nor the DPP’s Tsai Ing-wen.
