黄继光，四川中江人。1951年参加中国人民志愿军。1952年10月，在上甘岭战役中，黄继光所在的45师135团二营与美军为首的“联合国军”和南朝鲜军激战4昼夜后，于19日夜奉命夺取上甘岭西侧597.9高地。部队接连攻占3个阵地后，受阻于零号阵地，连续组织3次爆破均未奏效。时任某部6连通信员的黄继光挺身而出，要求担负爆破任务，经领导同意后，他在战友肖登良、吴三羊掩护下冒着枪林弹雨冲向地堡。

连续摧毁敌人几个火力点后，吴三羊不幸牺牲，肖登良身负重伤，黄继光的左臂也被打穿。面对敌人的猛烈扫射，他忍着伤痛，迅速抵近敌中心火力点，连投几枚手雷，敌机枪顿时停止了射击。当部队趁势发起冲击时，残存地堡内的机枪又突然疯狂扫射，攻击部队再次受阻。这时黄继光多处负伤，弹药用尽。为了战斗的胜利，避免更大的伤亡，他顽强地向火力点爬去，靠近地堡射孔时，奋力扑上去，用自己的胸膛，死死地堵住了敌人正在喷射火舌的机枪，壮烈捐躯。在黄继光英雄壮举的激励下，部队迅速攻占零号阵地，全歼守敌两个营。

战斗结束后，他的遗体被埋在了师指挥所所在地真菜洞(朝鲜地名)。根据他生前的申请，部队党委追认他为中共党员。志愿军总部为他追记一等功，授予其“中国人民志愿军特级英雄”称号。朝鲜授予他“朝鲜民主主义人民共和国英雄”称号及金星奖章、一级国旗勋章。

黄继光的精神永远传承了下来，遗憾的是，他没有留下任何可供人瞻仰的照片。2007年6月6日下午，黄继光的战友、上甘岭战役志愿军45师前线指挥所秘书——年届八旬的湖北省作家谢万丁风尘仆仆赶赴北京，亲手将自己保存了55年的一组黄继光遗照孤品无偿捐赠给军事博物馆，弥补了黄继光无照片传世的缺憾。
