China's vehicle production and sales volume increased from more than 2 million units in 2000 to more than 18 million units in 2010. 

Accelerating independent innovation 

Leading domestic automaker FAW Group's independently developed high-quality J6 heavy-duty truck and diesel engine won the first prize of China's 2010 State Top Scientific and Technological Awards on Jan. 14, 2011. It was the first time that civil vehicle technology received the country's highest science honor, becoming the epitome of domestic automakers' independent innovation. 

As domestic automakers have constantly improved their independent innovation capability, China's commercial vehicle sector has witnessed two encouraging changes over the past 10 years. First, domestic vehicles have expanded from one single type to other types such as light, medium-duty, and heavy-duty cars. 

Second, domestic vehicle production and sales volume have both increased significantly. At present, 90 percent of the 97 models of freight vehicles in China are domestic brands, and 76 percent of the 158 bus brands are domestic ones. Chinese automakers firmly hold a leading position in the domestic auto market.
