We have heard of counterfeiting before. Usually it refers to people making money by printing it instead of earning it. But counterfeiting also can involve all sorts of consumer goods and manufactured products. From wellknown brand names such as Calvin Klein jeans to auto parts, counterfeiters have found ways to produce goods that look authentic. In some instances, counterfeit products look better than the original!

The demand of brandname products has helped counterfeiting grow into a very profitable business throughout the world and into a serious problem for legal manufacturers and consumers alike. Faulty counterfeit parts have caused more than two dozen crashes. Most counterfeit auto parts do not meet federal safety standards.

Counterfeiting hurts manufacturers in many ways. Analysts estimate that, in the United States alone, annual revenue loss runs from $6 billion to $8 billion. Perhaps even worse, consumers blame the innocent manufacturers when they unknowingly buy a counterfeit product and find it doesn't perform as expected. Sometimes entire economies can suffer. For instance, when farmers in Kenya and Zaire used counterfeit fertilizers, both countries lost most crops.

By copying other firms' products, counterfeiters avoid research and development costs and most marketing costs. Hightech products such as computers and their software products are especially easy to attack. As long as counterfeiting is profitable, large quantities of products are available to copy, and the laws are difficult to enforce, counterfeiters can be expected to be proper for a long time.

56. The word “counterfeiting” most probably means ______.

A. making things of poor quality for profit

D. more profitable to counterfeit than hightech products

59. The quality of most counterfeit products is ______.

Your mobile phone rings, and instead of the usual electronic signals,  it's playing your favourite music.  A friend sends your favourite song to cheer you up. One day, a record company might forward new records and music videos to your phone.

The mobile business is getting into the music business. For the moment, the interest is in pleasant ring tones, but some companies are hoping to take full advantage of the next generation of mobile phones—allpurpose gadgets (小玩意儿)that blend the phone, personal stereo, video player and Internet browser into one.

Finally, record companies might send new records and videos to fans who register their cell phone numbers.

The fans could pass music or songs along to friends by a kind of musical trading card.  Unlike Internet tracks, mobile downloads would be easy for record companies to control, said former record industry official Ralph Simon, who is now chairman of

Yourmobile, based in Santa Monic, California.

“If you pass a song along to other phones through a network, each phone can be charged” said Simon. “It's like going through a tollgate(收费站). There's more possibility for copyright control than there is on the Internet.”

Massachusettsbased Converse is offering a service in Portugal and the Netherlands that lets people record tunes on their voice mail or send music as presents to friends.  Finally, people might be able to sing karaoke and pass them along.  The company is sure that people will want to use music to reach out and touch someone.

“A mobile phone is not a listening machine, and you'll be disappointed if you think you can change it to a radio”said Ohad Ouziel, a creative manager for Converse in Israel. “But if someone sends you a song while you're on vacation, you appreciate the feeling.”

60Record companies __________ the idea of passing songs and music along mobile phones.

Aare worried about           Bare interested in

Ctry hard to stop               Dtake no notice of

61The underlined word “blend” in the second paragraph most probably means “__________”

Asend                                       Bbecome

Cmix                                        Dcompare

62According to Ralph Simon it would be easier to __________ through the mobile phone network than through the Internet.

Aprotect copyright of music works

Bsend personal messages

Cpass along songs and music

Dsend voice mail

63“Massachusettsbased Converse” in  the sixth paragraph probably refers to __________.

The impression you make at the beginning of an interview is very important. Employers often decide to hire someone in the first three minutes of the interview. They judge you by your appearanceattitude and manners.

A friendly smile when you walk into the room is important. A smile shows a confident and positive attitude.

When you introduce yourself, make eye contact with the interviewer. Some interviewers offer a handshake. Others don't.

Try to be as natural as possible. But pay attention to your body language. The way you sitwalkgestureuse your voice and show feelings on your face is all part of your body language. Listen to questions carefully. If you don't understand a question, ask the interviewer to repeat or explain

“I'm sorry, but I didn't catch that.”

“I'm not sure exactly what you mean.”

Almost everyone is nervous in a job interview. Interviewers know that. They don't expect you to be totally calm and relaxed. But they expect you to try to control your nervousness. They expect you to show confidence in your ability to do the job.

At the end of the interview, thank the interviewer for her or his time.

“The first and best of victories is for a man to conquer himself; to be conquered by himself is, of all things, the most shameful” says Plato. Selfcontrol is at the root of all the advantages. Let a man give in to his impulses (冲动) and feelings, and from that moment he gives up his moral (道德上的) freedom.

A single angry word has lost many a friend. When Socrates found in himself any temper or anger, he would check it by speaking low in order to control himself. If you are conscious of being angry, keep your mouth shut so that you can hold back rising anger. Many a person has dropped dead in great anger. Fits of anger bring fits of disease. “Whom the gods would destroy they first make mad.” “Keep cool” says George Herbert, “for fierceness (狂怒) makes error a fault.”

To be angry with a weak man is to prove that you are not strong yourself. “Anger” says Pythagoras, “brings with folly(愚蠢) and ends with regret.” You must measure the strength of a man by the power of the feelings he conquers, not by the power of those which conquer him.

Selfcontrol is man's last greatest victory.

If a man lacks self-control he seems to lack everything. Without it he can have

no patience, no power to govern himself; he can have no selfconfidence, for he will always be controlled by his strongest feeling. If he lacks selfcontrol, the very backbone and nerve of character are lacking also.

72. What does the reader learn from the first paragraph?

A. The greatest victory for a man is to conquer everything except himself.

B. One's moral freedom is based on the control of himself.

C. To control oneself is the most difficult in one's life.

D. If a person is too stubborn, he will feel most shameful.

73. What is the correct interpretation of “Whom the gods would destroy they first make mad” ?

A. If the gods want to kill you, they make you crazy first.

B. If you always lose your temper, you will soon be finished.

C. If you cannot control yourself, you will become crazy.

D. If you are mad, you will be punished by the gods.

74. If a man lacks selfcontrol, he lacks all of the following EXCEPT ______.

A. the very backbone and nerve of character

B. the patience and power to control himself

C. strong feelings

D. selfconfidence

75. The author's main purpose in writing this article is to ______.

A. explain that selfcontrol is the key to success

B. teach people how to control everything in order to make a great success

C. distinguish all kinds of selfcontrol and suggest ways for keeping it

D. advise people not to lose temper so as to make and keep more friends

 DO NOT WALK AWAY

It will make finding you more difficult if you have gone off in a different direction, as search teams will be trying to follow your path. Searchers often end up finding a car with no one in it.

If you get frostbite, do not rewarm the affected area until you 're out of danger. You can walk on frostbitten feet, but once you warm the area and can feel the pain, you will not want to walk anywhere. Try to protect the frostbitten area and keep it dry until you are rescued.

Nothing Is Small

In our daily life, some great disasters frequently happen not because of something big but something small. As are shown in the pictures, a train is turned over because a rail spike is loose without being fastened; a great forest fire breaks out because of a lighted butt thrown without being put out; a great dam is destroyed as a result of a tube fountain in a dam without being found out, which have all caused a great loss to both people and society.

We can learn, from the above examples,  that nothing is small in our work and life and any behavior of carelessness or no responsibility or a small fault will result in great damage or disaster. So we should be very strict with ourselves and learn to be responsible and careful in our life and work.
