In the African Joint Pavilion, I am overwhelmed by the Wall of the African Smile. 28 African faces from different ethnic groups, derived from Lucy, the earliest human fossil, the foremother of human beings.

Here's how: the cost of designing and building the pavilions of all 42 African countries, 100 million dollars, was paid for entirely by China.

But China was sensitive-- it paid the bills, but it did not control the content. Each African country directed its own design.

China has had long interest in Africa; now China needs resources, particularly energy, and this is what Africa has in abundance.
