1. adore

Adore 有好几种意思，我们一起来看一下：
A. If you adore someone, you feel great love and admiration for him or her. 敬爱，敬重；爱慕
e.g. She adored her parents and would do anything to please them.
B. If you adore something, you like it very much. 非常喜欢，痴迷
e.g. I adore apple very much and eat two a day.

2. make an offer

这是口语中很常用的词组，其意义取决于作为名词的offer一词的不同含义，如在电影《情归巴黎》中有一句台词是：
You never said a word about planning to make an offer to Patrick. （关于你要跟Patrick合并的事情你一个字都没提过。）
这里的翻译是意译，我们可以看出来make an offer是"出价"的意思。
而在本电影的台词里，这个make an offer的意思显然不同，应该是"求婚"的意思。offer一词本身就有"求婚"的意思，所以"向某人求婚"我们可以说propose to sb. 或者make an offer to sb.

3. put paid to 结束……，了结……（口语）

这是一个挺有意思的短语，If an unexpected event puts paid to someone's hopes, chances, or plans, it completely ends or destroys them. 主要在说英式英语的国家中使用。

The series of terrible blind dates put paid to her dream of an ideal marriage.
一系列可怕的相亲断送了她对理想婚姻的梦想。

4. end up/end up with 以……结束，以……告终

If you end up doing something or end up in a particular state, you do that thing or get into that state even though you did not originally intend to.
e.g. Every time they went dancing they ended up in a bad mood.
他们每次出去跳舞都不欢而散。
She could have ended up a millionairess.
她本来可以成为一个百万富翁的。

Bingley: Well I think it's amazing that you young ladies have the patience to be so accomplished.

Caroline: What do you mean, Charles?

Bingley: You all paint tables and play the piano and embroider cushions. I never heard of a young lady, but people say she's accomplished.

Darcy: The word is indeed applied too liberally. I cannot boast of knowing more than half a dozen women in all my acquaintance that are truly accomplished.

Caroline: Nor I, to be sure.

Elizabeth: Goodness, you must comprehend a great deal in the idea.

3. accomplished 多才多艺的；熟练的；完成的

说到“多才多艺”，大家马上想到词的可能是 versatile，accomplished 这个词比 versatile 还要高一个等级，差不多到了专家的程度，而 versatile 多用来指“能胜任……”。例如：
an accomplished lady 一个才女
an accomplished pianist 有造诣的钢琴家
an accomplished facts 不容争辩的事实

4. get/stand in one's way / be in the way

这是口语里特别常用的词组，意思是“挡路，妨碍”。我们来看两个例子：
e.g.
1) Keep on going with your reading. Don't let me stand in your way.
2) You're in the way, would you please move aside?

Austen, Jane (1775-1817), English novelist, noted for her witty studies of early-19th-century English society. With meticulous detail, Austen portrayed the quiet, day-to-day life of members of the upper middle class. If you single sb. out from a group, you choose them and give them special attention or treatment. 挑选

e.g. They shouldn't have made such a hasty decision.
另外在汉语中我们的一句成语“欲速则不达”跟hasty的同根词haste有关，英语中有两种表达：
Haste makes waste
More haste, less speed.
大家不妨在这里牢记住这个表达。

3. I'm the last woman in the world who could make you happy.

这种句型的基本结构是“the last+名词+定语从句”，表达最大程度的否定或者不赞成。本句话的意思是：我是这个世界上最不可能带给你幸福的女人。
e.g. To be a teacher is the last thing in the world that I could do. 我最不愿意干的事就是当老师。
This city is the last place that I want to live in the world. 我最不愿意生活的地方就是这个城市。

4. flatter oneself that

If you flatter yourself that something good is the case, you believe that it is true, although others may disagree. 自鸣得意，自以为
e.g. They flattered themselves that they would win. 他们自以为会一定获胜。

Flatter一词还有一些其它用法：
If someone flatters you, they praise you in an exaggerated way that is not sincere, because they want to please you or to persuade you to do something. 奉承，谄媚
e.g. I knew she was just flattering me, because she wanted me to buy her scarf.
此外flattering和flattered在口语中的出现频率也很高，flattering继承了flatter的意思，作为形容词的时候有“谄媚的，讨好的”意思，但是也有“讨人喜欢的”意思，
如： How flattering your company is since so many other companies are after you.
你看你们公司多招人喜欢，那么多其他公司都跟在你们屁股后面转。
但是flattered的意思有所不同，
If you feel flattered by something that has happened, you are pleased about it because it makes you feel important or special. 表示"受宠若惊"的意思
e.g. I feel flattered by what you said. 你的话让我受宠若惊。

Darcy: Miss Elizabeth. I have struggled in vain and can bear it no longer. These past months have been a torment. I came to Rosings with the single object of seeing you. I had to see you. I have fought against my better judgment, my family's expectation, the inferiority of your birth, my rank, all these things, and I'm willing to put them aside and ask you to end my agony.

Elizabeth: I don't understand.

Darcy: I love you. Most ardently. Please do me the honor of accepting my hand.

Elizabeth: Sir, I appreciate the struggle you have been through, and I am very sorry to have caused you pain. Believe me, it was unconsciously done.

Darcy: Is this your reply?

Darcy: Are you... are you laughing at me?

Elizabeth: My sister hardly shows her true feelings to me. I suppose you suspect that his fortune had some bearing?

Darcy: No! I wouldn't do your sister the dishonor, though it was suggested...

Darcy: You take an eager interest in that gentleman's concerns.

Prevail一词还有另外两个常用的意思，一是“流行，盛行”，另一个是“获胜，取得成功”。如：This old custom does not prevail now. 这种旧风俗现在已经不流行了。
Truth is great and will prevail. 真理是至高无上的，且必将获胜。

4. take up

“占用时间”的意思。这是一个常用词组，意思极其丰富。在英语中简单词构成的词组往往意思都很丰富。我们看看除了在本片段中的这个意思之外，take up还有什么别的含义：
a. 对……发生兴趣；开始从事
e.g. He did not particularly want to take up competitive sport.
b. 着手处理
e.g. He intends to take up the proposal with the prime minister.

Lady Catherine: You can be of no loss, Miss Bennet, to understand why I am here.

Elizabeth: Indeed you're mistaken. I cannot account for this honour at all.

Catherine: Miss Bennet, I warn you, I am not to be trifled with. A report of a most alarming nature has reached me, that you intend to be united with my nephew, Mr. Darcy. I know this to be a scandalous falsehood, though not wishing to injure him by supposing it possible, I instantly set off to make my sentiments known.

Elizabeth: If you believed it to be impossible, I wonder you took the trouble of coming so far.

Catherine: To hear it contradicted, Miss Bennet.

Elizabeth: Your coming will be a rather confirmation, surely if indeed such a report exists.

Catherine: If? Do you pretend to be ignorant of it? Has it not been industriously circulated by yourself?

Elizabeth: I have never heard of it.

Catherine: And can you declare there is no foundation for it?

Elizabeth: I do not pretend to possess equal frankness with your Ladyship. You may ask a question which I may choose not to answer.

Catherine: This is not to be borne. Has my nephew made you an offer of marriage?

Elizabeth: Your Ladyship has declared it to be impossible.

Catherine: Let me be understood! Mr. Darcy is engaged to my daughter. Now what have you to say?

Elizabeth: Only this. If that is the case, you can have no reason to suppose he would make an offer to me.

Catherine: You selfish girl! This union has been planned since their infancy. Do you think it can be prevented by a young woman of inferior birth whose own sister's elopement resulted in a scandalously patched-up marriage only achieved at the expense of your uncle? Heaven and Earth! Are the shades of Pemberley to be thus polluted? Now tell me once and for all, are you engaged to him?

Elizabeth: I am not.

Catherine: Will you promise never to enter into such an engagement?

Mr. Bennet: Lizzie, what on earth is going on?

1. account for

这里是“解释；说明”的意思。
e.g. She could not account for her mistake.

2. trifle

十八世纪英国的财产继承与婚姻

西欧的财产继承以诸子中一人继承为主，主要是长子继承，如果没有男嗣的话，根据限嗣继承法，由其他男性继承。这也是为什么班内特家的财产要由柯林斯继承的缘故。这种一人继承是基于土地财产的不可分割，而动产和现金则可以分割继承（甚至均分）。这也是为什么Miss Bingley，Miss Darcy都继承了相当数量的财产，而班内特家的几个姐妹在父亲死后每人可以分得一千英镑财产的缘故。

在十八世纪末十九世纪初的英国乡村，封建保守势力还是相当强大。婚姻很要求门当户对。达西和伊丽莎白虽然财产相差悬殊，但毕竟属于同一阶层，这一点连凯瑟琳夫人也不能否认，这也是他们最终能结合在一起的重要原因之一。
