poverty
poor “贫穷”，普通用词，指贫困潦倒，生活处境艰难。名词是 poverty 。
1) The poor family is on the brink of starvation.
(这个贫困的家庭濒于饥饿)。
2) If the world becomes less unfair and if people can get better education, much of the poverty can be wiped out.
（如果世界变得更加公平,如果人们可以获得更好的教育,大部分贫穷可以被消灭。）
poverty-stricken
destitute*
poverty-stricken 和 destitute都表示极度贫困，语气强烈。
1) They advocate that more public funds should be established to assist poverty-stricken families.
（他们主张应该建立更多的公共资金来帮助贫困家庭）。 2) He is indulged in gambling which makes him so destitute that his wife has decided to leave him. （他沉迷于赌博,使他变得贫困潦倒、以致他的妻子决定离开他。）
