explain   “解释”、“说明”，普通用词，用途广泛，指试图说明事物的含义、原因、形成、过程等，以使他人了解和理解。

      1) The lawyer carefully explained to us the whole procedure of the trial.

         （律师详细地向我们说明了整个审理的过程。）

 2) How will you explain to the board the loss of such a big sum of money in transactions?

         （你将如何向董事会解释在交易损失了一大笔钱呢?）

account for  “对……做出解释”、“说明……的原因”，可与explain换用。

       1) He accounted for the whole matter just in time to erase our misunderstanding.

          （他对整件事做出了解释，及时地消除了我们之间的误解。）

       2) We can now easily account for many things which were thought to be mysterious by the ancients.

          （现在我们可以很容易地解释很多古人认为是神秘的事情。）

      interpret   “说明”、“阐明”，指用语言或其他方式解释较为难以理解的事物。也可指把一种语言口译出另一种语言。

      1) Freud attempted to interpret the meaning of dreams.

         （弗洛伊德试图解释梦的意义。）

      2) I cannot make out the meaning of the poem. Can you interpret it for me?

         （我不能理解这首诗的意义。你能帮我解释一下吗?）

     elucidate  “说明”、“阐明”，指用更多的资料、信息阐明难懂的问题。

      1) The scientist elucidated his theory by a few simple demonstrations.

         （这位科学家用几个简单的示范就阐明了他的理论。）

      2) This theory is further elucidated in a series of articles published in the past ten years.

         （这个理论在过去十年发表的一系列文章中得到了进一步阐明。）

 exemplify

illustrate 

formulate

articulate

exemplify    “举例说明(或证明)”、“例示”，指在说话或写作中引用实例和例证解释说明抽象的事物。

  1) He exemplified each main point in his article.

          （他举例证明了他的文章中每个要点。）

2) To exemplify what I mean, I will offer you some figures in our annual production.

     （为举例说明我的意思，我将提供给你们我们年度生产的一些数据。）

 illustrate  “阐明”、“说明”，指不仅用实例来解释说明，而且还用图示或表格以达到生动、形象、清晰地效果。

  1) The teacher gave lots of examples in order to get the difficult points in the text fully illustrated.

          （老师举了很多例子使课本中的难点得到充分的解释。）

2) The way that a pump works is used to illustrate how the heart sends blood round the body.

          （泵工作的方式可用来阐明心脏是如何将血液输送到全身的。）

formulate   “阐述”，指系统或确切地或提出想法、观点、理论、计划等。另一意思是“制定”。

1) Whenever trying to formulate his ideas in front of the teacher, the student always becomes nervous.

           （每当他想在老师面前阐述他的观点,这位学生总是显得很紧张。）

2）He got so nervous that he could not formulate what had to happened to him.

           （他紧张极了,不能把发生的事情阐述清楚。）

3) We must formulate/work out new strategies to meet the challenge to the increasingly stringent import-liberalization program.

     （我们必须制定新的策略以应对日益临近的进口限制解除的挑战。）

articulate  “阐述”，侧重指表达阐述得清楚有力。

1) At the press the spokesman articulated the steady stand of our government on the incident.

          （在记者招待会上新闻发言人阐明了我国政府对这次事件的坚定定立场。）

2) The speaker continued to articulate why he strongly objected to the new program.

          （演讲者继续阐述他为什么强烈反对这项新计划的原因。）
