A public high school in the rural town of Boonsboro, Maryland, offers a special program. Top students in the ninth and tenth grades can attend single- sex classes for math, science, and social studies.
The aim is to help teenagers keep their work by keeping males and females apart. Rebecca Brown chooses the students for what Boonsboro High School calls the Academy. “What we really want to do is take that top group of kids and take them to the very highest level they can achieve here, so that they’re prepared for college,” she said. They need high marks and test scores and strong teacher recommendations. They also need to be involved in activities.
Michael Bair has been at Boonsboro High for twenty years and directs the Academy. His ninth-grade English class for boys centers on books that he believes boys find interesting. “The novels they’re reading now, are very manly novels. They’re novels that deal with the arrogance(傲慢) of man and the pride of man.” One of those books, for example, is “The Call of the Wild” by Jack London. This classic story tells of a dog stolen from his home and sold to work as a sled dog in Canada’s Klondike Gold Rush.
On this day, the students are working in small groups. Vincent and Logan explain why they’re drawing pictures that relate to the story. Vincent said, “The main character, Buck, gets abducted(绑架) and they sent him off to the Yukon in a train. So I’m drawing part of the story where he’s in the train. It gets you to visualize the setting of the story and gets you to think more about what’s going on in the story, the important events of the story. ” “Instead of just doing work sheets about it, this is a lot more fun,” Logan added happily.
Morgan Van likes being in the Academy. She says boys and girls act differently when they are together in a classroom. “To me, it almost seems like it’s hindering (妨碍)your chances at developing yourself because you’re more focused on ‘Oh, I wish they’d shut up. Oh, what do they think of me?’ instead of focusing on what’s the homework or what’s going on in this class, what’s the lessons.”

3. The underlined word “visualize” in Paragraph 4 probably means ________.
A. pay a visit to  B. form a picture of  C. take a look at  D. have a gift for
4. What can we conclude from the text?

B. Jack London is a main character in the book “The Call of The Wild”.
C. Vincent thinks that his drawings can help understand the novel better.
D. Morgan Van Fleet thinks the program does no good to her.
5. The text is probably taken from __________.
A. a school’s introduction   B. a teacher’s dairy

There are two basic ways to see growth: one as a product, the other as a process. People have generally viewed personal growth as an external (外在的) result or a product that can easily be identified and measured. The worker who gets a rise, the student whose grades improve, the foreigner who learns a new language—all these examples of people who have measurable results to show for their efforts.
By contrast (对照) , the process of personal growth is much more difficult to determine, since it is a journey and not the specific signposts or landmarks along the way.The process is not the road itself, but the attitudes, feelings people have , and their caution or courage, as they meet with new experiences and unexpected difficulties. In this process, the journey never really ends;there are always new ways to experience the world, new ideas to try, new challenges to accept.
In order to grow, to travel new roads, people need to have a willingness to take risks, to face the unknown, and to accept the possibility that they may “fail” at first. How we see ourselves as we try a new way of being is necessary for our ability to grow.Do we see ourselves as quick and curious? If so, we tend to take more chances and be more open to unfamiliar experiences.Do we think we’re shy and indecisive? Then our sense of fear can cause us to hesitate, to move slowly, and we think we are slow to adapt change or that we’re not smart enough to deal with a new challenge. Then we are likely to take a more passive role or not try at all.
These feelings of insecurity (不安全) and self-doubt are both unavoidable and necessary if we are to change and grow.If we protect ourselves too much, then we stop growing. We become trapped inside a shell of our own making.
6.In the author’s eye, one who views personal growth as a process would ______.
A. succeed in climbing up the social ladder   B. grow up from his own achievements
C. face difficulties and take up challenges    D. aim high and reach his goal each time
7.Which of the following can be viewed as the process of personal growing?
A. Our manager was always willing to accept new challenges.
B. Jane won the first prize in the speech competition.
C. Jerry picked up French during his stay in Paris.
D. Father’s salary rose from 5, 000 to 7,000.
8.For personal growth, the author is in favor of all the following EXCEPT _______.
A. being curious about more changes            B. being quick in self-adaptation
C. having an open mind to new experiences   D. staying away from failures and challenges
9.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?
A. It is not so easy to measure personal growth.
B. To try and fail on the new road facing the unknown is unavoidable.
C. There are only two ways to see a person’s growth.
D. If you are too shy to take any risks in life, you cannot grow up.
10.The best title for this passage should be ______.
A. Facing New Challenges                  B. Growth—Product or Process
C. Two Basic Ways of Growth            D. Overcoming Internal Fears

While 47.5 percent of the respondents felt prices were rather high but still tolerable. Mr. Dou Lanqing, one respondent, said, “The goods in supermarket are apparently more expensive than before. Respecting Parents Program
Showing respect to parents is one of the Chinese traditional moral values. However, as most students today are “the only child” in their family, they often regard themselves as the “centre” of the family without caring much about their parents. To improve this situation, our school has started a program, which is called “Respecting Parents Program”. Ten “do’s” have been worked out for the students to follow. For example, we are expected to remember our parents’ birthdays and express our good wishes to them and greet them when we see them returning home.
The program has been winning praises from parents and society. People say that is what we should have done earlier.
读写任务
Dear boys and girls,
It’s my great honour to make a speech here. Recently, the People’s Bank of China conducted a quarterly survey on prices in 50 cities. Nearly half of the respondents said they couldn’t tolerate the increasing prices, while some others considered it OK although they acknowledged the truth. As a result, many families began to seek various ways to save money.
The survey does draw my attention to the rapidly increasing prices in my daily life. Take food as an example, the prices of pork, beef, fish, chicken, as well as various vegetables, have risen at least 20%. It seems that money is flowing out of our pockets more quickly, but silently.
Although we middle school students feel less stress than our parents do, we should also have a proper budget for our pocket money. For example, we can make the most of each exercise book and reuse some waste paper. Or we can also try to cut down our expenses on unnecessary magazines, CDs and so on. In a word, we can save money in many aspects in our daily life.
All in all, saving money is a great Chinese virtue and it is especially needed in this period. Thank you!
