The Earthscraper: A 65-Story Building Buried Under Mexico City

Instead of building a skyscraper from the ground up, BNKR Arquitectura has proposed the complete

opposite: to build an inverted building 300-meters deep, underneath Mexico City's surface. The firm explains

that Mexico City is in dire need of new infrastructure for business and living space, but the scarcity of available

land to build on has made this a problem. Local laws also make it difficult, as new structures are limited to a

 height of only eight stories.

As such, BNKR Arquitectura's ambitious solution is to build the Earthscraper, a massive 65-story

skyscraper deep below the metropolis of Mexico City. The first half of the Earthscraper is planned to house a

museum containing Aztec and Mayan artifacts, as well as retail and housing space, while the remaining 35 stories

below will be used for office space.. The firm will construct it in the appearance of "an inverted pyramid with a

central void," which provides access to natural lighting and ventilation for all its 65-floor residents down to the

lowest levels. Construction of the building would not impede daily city activities, as the colossal hole in which it

will be built under is going to be covered with a glass floor. A potential obstacle is the danger of earthquakes, but

for now it appears that the earthscraper hasn't been given the go signal yet.

    不是在地面上建造一座摩天大厦, BNKR Arquitectura(墨西哥建筑设计公司)的设计方案完

This ambitious "Earthscraper" concept from BNKR Aquitectura seeks to address several problems faced by

Mexico City - a growing population, the lack of new plots for construction, the need to conserve historic buildings

and height restrictions on new structures. "The historic center of Mexico City is in desperate need for a pragmatic

make-over," says BNKR. The solution - build an inverted pyramid underneath the main plaza at the heart of the

city.

A kind of reversal of the historical Aztec pyramid, the Earthscraper would aim to preserve the visual aesthetic

of the historic city square whilst also retaining the public space, commonly used year round for events such as

concerts, political gatherings, open-air exhibitions and cultural celebrations. The 775,000 square meter design is

capped with a glass "roof" and habitable spaces are positioned around the central void, allowing natural light to

filter down to even the lowest of levels.

The first ten stories would offer a tourist attraction, with all floors displaying Aztec and Mayan artifacts in a

pre-Columbian museum. The design sees the next ten stories filled with retail shops and domestic housing, whilst

the deepest levels offer 35 stories of office space.

The concept is reminiscent of the famous glass pyramid featured at the center of Le Louvre Museum in Paris,

but with mammoth proportions. "The Earthscraper is the skyscraper's antagonist in an historic urban landscape

where the latter is condemned and the preservation of the built environment is the paramount ambition," says

BNKR.

The Historic Center of Mexico City is in a desperate need of a programmatic make-over. New infrastructure,

office, retail and living space is required but no empty plots are available. Federal and local laws prohibit

demolishing historic buildings and height regulations limit new structures to eight stories. The Earthscraper is the

Skyscrapers antagonist in a historic urban landscape where the latter is condemned and the preservation of the

built environment is the paramount ambition. It preserves the iconic presence of the city square and the existing

hierarchy of the buildings that surround it. It is an inverted pyramid with a central void to allow all habitable spaces

to enjoy natural lighting and ventilation.

To conserve the numerous activities that take place on the city square year round (concerts, political

manifestations, open-air exhibitions, cultural gatherings, military parades.), the massive hole is covered with a glass

floor that allows the life of the Earthscraper to blend with everything happening on top.

I'm not sure how useful the Earthscraper would be in Mexico City (what with earthquakes and the sinking),

but it's definitely a fascinating idea on par with building an arcology in a Siberian diamon mine. Anyone want to

commute 220 meters underground to their office?
