healthy, fit & well
三者均可表示“ 健康的”,区别如下:
1. 从句法上看:healthy 可自由地用作表语或定语,well 通常用作表语( 在现代美国英语中有时也用作定语) ,而 fit 则多用作表语( 偶尔也用作定语)。
2. 从含义和用法上看:healthy 主要指一个人身体强健、很少生病,尤指一个人长期的健康特征,但相比之下,well 则通常指人们在特定场合下的健康状况。如:
Though he is 80 years old, he is still healthy. 他虽然有 80 岁了,但仍然很健康。
You don’t look very well. 你的气色不太好。
比较并体会:

2. 两者之后均可接复合宾语,复合宾语中的动词可以用现在分词( 指动作正在进行) 或省去 to 的不定式( 指一个完整的动作) 。如:

注:在被动语态中,不定式要带 to 。如:
He was heard to sing. 有人听见他唱歌。
若宾语与其后的动词有动宾关系,则用过去分词。如:

3. hear 作为感官动词,表示无意识地“ 听见” ,一般不用于进行时态。但如果它表示一种有意识的动作( 如指“ 倾听” 、“ 听取” 等) ,则可用于进行时态,此时 hear 与 listen to 基本同义,有时可互换( 注:互换的场合多为宾语表示报告、演讲、讲课、音乐会等的名词) 。如:

high & tall
两者都可表示“ 高”,区别如下:
1. tall 表示某物或某人从顶部到底部的距离,其反义词是 short ( 矮) ;high 表示某物高出地面的距离,其反义词是 low( 低) 。比如:父亲比儿子 tall, 但若儿子站到椅子上,则说儿子比父亲 high 。又如:在一张桌子上放了几个高脚玻璃杯,一个小孩拿不到,他可能会说:Those tall glasses are too high for me to reach. ( 那几个高脚玻璃杯对我来说太高了,我拿不到)。
2. 指人的高度时一般用 tall ,但是,若说出了人的具体高度,则也可用 high 。如:
She is taller than me. 她比我高。
He is six feet tall [high]. 他身高 6 英尺。
3. 表示细长之物( 如树、竹竿、桅杆、烟囱、塔、建筑物等) 的高度时,用 high, tall 均可。如:

4. 表示抽象意义的高,一般只用 high 。如:

high & highly
1. high 用作副词,通常表示具体的高,主要修饰动词。如:

hire & employ
两者均可表示“ 雇用”,但有区别:
1. hire 为非正式用词,主要强调受雇者为工钱而被雇用。如:
He hired a dozen men to do the work. 他雇了 12 个人做这工作。
He hired a car and a man to drive it. 他租了一辆车并请了个人开车。
2. employ 指正式雇用,工作相对稳定,有固定薪水,还可能晋升职务等。如:

holiday, vacation & leave
1. holiday 和 vacation 都可表示“ 假期” ,前者主要用于英国英语中,后者主要用于美国英语中。如:

两者都可与介词 on 连用构成习语。如:
He is on holiday [vacation]. 他在度假。

该习语通常不用冠词,但有时可用物主代词。如:

(2) 两者之后均可接 that- 从句,其含义和结构均有差别:hope 表示可能实现的希望,从句谓语动词用陈述语气( 且可以用现在时表示将来意义) ;而 wish 则表示难以实现的愿望,从句谓语动词一般要用虚拟语气( 指将来情况多由 could, would 或 might 构成,指现在或当时的情况谓语用过去时,指过去情况用过去完成时) 。如:
We hope you (will) like it. 我们希望你喜欢它。
I hope you weren’t late. 我希望你没有迟到。
I wish I could speak French. 我要是能说法语就好了。
He wished he hadn’t said it. 他想要是没那样说就好了。
注:hope 和 wish 之后接从句若为否定时,一般要否定从句,而不否定主句( 如上例) 。
(3) hope 用作及物动词,其宾语通常只能是不定式或 that 从句,而不能是不定式的复合结构或双宾语;而 wish 则可接不定式的复合结构,也可接双宾语( 主要用于祝愿) 。如:
误:I hope you to go at once.
正:I wish you to go at once. 我希望你马上去。
误:I hope you good luck.
正:I wish you good luck. 祝你好运。
注:两者均不直接后跟名词 或代词 作宾语,遇此情况,要借助介词 for ,表示“ 想得到” 或“ 希望有” 。如:
I hope [wish] for a computer. 我想要有台电脑。
(4) hope 在下列口语说法中不能用 wish 代替:I hope, I hope so, I hope not 等。如:
A :Will it rain tomorrow? 明天会下雨吗?
B :I hope so (not). 但愿会下雨( 不会下雨)。
2. 用作名词时:wish 着重人的主观愿望,而 hope 则着重指客观上的希望。从结构上看:表示做某事的愿望或希望,wish 后要接不定式,而 hope 后则接 of doing sth 。如:
I have no wish to go(=I don’t want to go). 我不想去。
I have no hope of going(=I want to go but l can’t). 我没有去的希望( 即想去但去不成) 。
how far & how long
how far 用于问距离有多远,how long 用于询问时间或事物有多长。如:

how many & how much
1. 两者均表示“ 多少” ,how many 指数,其后接可数名词复数,how much 指量,其后接不可数名词。如:
How many chidlren does he have? 他有几个孩子?
How many pages of the book have you read? 这本书你已读了多少页?
How much time did you spend on it? 做此事你花了多少时间?
注:有时其后不接词,how many 依然指数( 可数) ,how much 依然指量( 不可数) 。如:
We have plenty of novels. How many do you want? 我们有很多小说。你要多少( 本)?
You need some money? How much do you want? 你需要钱? 要多少?
2. 用来询问价钱或表示计算,用 how much 。如:
How much is the coat? 这件上衣多少钱?
How much is four times five? 4 乘以 5 等于多少?
how long, how often & how soon
三者均可译为“ 多久”,但有区别:
1. how long 指多长时间,主要用来对一段时间( 如:three days, four weeks 等) 提问。如:
A :How long did he stay here? 他在这儿呆了多久?
B :About two hours. 大约两小时。
2. how often 指每隔多久,主要用来对频度副词或状语( 如:once a week, three times a month 等) 提问。如:
A :How often does he come here? 他( 每隔) 多久来一次?
B :Once a month. 每月一次。
3. how soon 指再过多久,主要用来对表示将来的一段时间( 如:in an hour, in two weeks 等) 提问。如:
A :How soon will he be back? 他要多久才回来?
B :In an hour. 1 小时以后。
hurt, injure & wound
三者均可表示“ 受伤” 或“ 伤害”,区别如下:
1. hurt 属普通用词,指身体上的受伤,可轻可重,常带有较强的疼痛感。另外它还经常用于比喻义,表示精神或感情上的伤害。如:
Are you badly hurt? 你伤得厉害吗?
You’ve hurt her feelings. 你伤害了她的感情。
I’m hurt not to have been invited. 没有邀请我,我很不痛快。
2. injure 与 hurt 的含义较为接近,但更正式,主要指人在意外事故中受到伤害。如:
In the accident 10 people died and 20 were seriously injured. 在这次事故中,有10 人死亡,20 受重伤。
有时也用于比喻义。如:
Smoking will injure your health. 抽烟会损害你的健康。
Her refusal injured his pride. 她拒绝他,伤害了他的自尊心。

两者在表示“ 是否”时的用法区别如下:
1. 互换的场合:引导宾语从句表示“ 是否” 时, 两者常可互换。如:
He asked if [whether] we wanted a drink. 他问我们是否想喝一杯。
He didn’t tell me if [whether] he would come. 他没有告诉我他是否会来。
注:若是引导条件状语从句,则只能用 if ( 意为“ 如果”)。
2. 通常用 if 的场合:当引导一个否定的宾语从句时,通常用 if 而不用 whether 。如:
I don’t care if it doesn’t rain. 我不在乎天是否下雨。
注:在个别词语 ( 如 wonder, not sure 等) 后的从句否定式有时也可能用 whether 来引导。如:
I wonder if [whether] he isn’t mistaken. 我想知道他是否错了。
3. 通常用 whether 的场合:
(1) 引导主语从句且放在句首时。如:
Whether he will come is still a question. 他是否会来还是个问题。
注:若在句首使用形式主语 it ,而将主语从句放在句末,则有时也可用 if 来引导。如:
It was not known whether [if] he would come. 不知他是否会来。
(2) 引导表语从句时。如:
The question is whether we should go on with the work. 问题是我们是否应该继续进行这项工作。
注:引导表语从句偶尔也用 if ( 很不正式) ,但远不如用 whether 常见。
(3) 引导宾语从句且放在句首时。如:

(5) 与 or 连用分别引导两个从句时。如:

注:or 若不是引导两个从句,而是连接两个词或短语,则也可用 if ( 但不如用 whether 常见) 。如:

I’m not sure whether to stay or leave. 我不知是留还是去。

8) 直接与 or not 连用时。如:

注:若不是直接与 or not 用在一起,则有时也可用 if 。如:
I don’t know whether [if] he will win or not. 我不知他是否能赢。
9) 在某些动词后( 如 discuss 等) 通常只用 whether 。如:

ill & sick
1. 两者都可表示“ 有病的” :作定语时通常用 sick ;作表语时可用 ill( 英) 或 sick ( 美) 。如:
a sick man 病人 be ill [sick] 生病
注:在英国英语中,用作表语的 sick 可用来表示“ 呕吐的” 或“ 恶心的” 。如:
She feels sick in buses. 她在公共汽车上觉得想呕。
The long train ride made me sick. 长时间搭乘火车使我想吐。

2. rough 主要指态度或行为粗鲁、粗野、粗暴等,与 gentle ( 温柔或文雅) 相对。如:
You are rough on him. 你对他太粗暴苛刻了。
His children are very rough with their toys. 他的孩子很不爱惜玩具。
3. rude 主要指言行粗鲁无礼、缺乏教养、让人反感等。如:
His conduct is rude. 他的行为很不礼貌。

注:有时也与 impolite 含义较为接近。如:
It’s rude [impolite] to interrupt. 打断别人讲话是不礼貌的。
in & into
1. 用作介词,in 表示某人或某物在某处里面,表静态意义;而 into 表示进入,具有动态意味。如:
There are some books in the schoolbag. 书包里有些书。
Put the books into the schoolbag. 把书放进书包。
注:在口语中,in 常可代替 into 。如:
Throw it in [into] the fire. 把它扔到火里去。
2. in 可用作介词或副词,而 into 通常只用作介词。如:
正:Come in [into] the house. 进屋来。
正:Come in. 进来。
误:Come into.
include & contain
两者均可表示“ 包含”,但有区别:
1. include 的宾语只能是整体中的一部分或是其要素之一,而不能是所谈事物的全体或所有要素。如:
Does the bill include a tip? 账单包括小费在内吗?
Five were killed, including a baby. 共有六人死亡,其中有一个婴儿。
2. contain 表示“ 包含” ,其实是指其内装有,即指某种较大的东西内装有较小的东西,其宾语可以是整体的一部分,也可以是其全体。如:

Sea water contains salt. 海水中含有盐分。
income, pay, wage & salary
1.从含义上看:income 指“ 收入” ,可指挣来的收入,也可指非挣来的收入( 如存款利息) ;salary 与 wage 两者都指“ 工资” 、“ 薪水” ,在含义上这是两个互补的词,前者多指脑力劳动者的工资,通常按月或年发放,而后者多指体力劳动者的工资,通常按周、日或小时付给,多用复数形式;pay 则主要指因工作或劳动所获得的报酬,可包括 salary 和 wage 。如:
Have you any income besides your pay? 你除了工资外还有别的什么收入吗?
A postman’s wages are £180 per week. 邮递员的工资为每周 180 英镑。
We expect a fair day’s wage for a fair day’s work. 我们希望做好一天的工作就得到一天应得的工资。
This company is offering a salary of $ 50 000 per year. 这家公司的年薪为 50 000 美元。
注:从可数性来看,income 和 salary 根据情况可用作可数或不可数名词,wage 通常用复数形式,但也可用单数形式,而 pay 通常只用作不可数名词。
2. 表示“ 收入” 或“ 工资” 的高低,根据情况可用 large, high, good,big, small, low, bad 等形容词修饰,一般不用 much, little 。如:

两者均表示“ 坚持”,区别如下:
1. 从含义上看,insist 主要指坚持某种意见或主张等,persist 则指坚持行动或行为,或固执地坚持某种意见。如:
He insisted on my staying there. 他坚持要我留在那儿。
He persists in reading in bed. 他老爱在床上看书。
2. 从搭配上看:用作不及物动词后接介词时,insist 后搭配介词on ,persist 后搭配介词 in 。如:
I always insist on wholesome bread. 我一贯主张要吃全麦面包。
He persists in his bad habit. 他坚持不改坏习惯。
另外,insist 可用作及物或不及物动词,用作及物动词时,其后通常接 that 从句( 是否用虚拟语气,视情况而定,即看从句内容是否为事实) ,而 persist 通常只用作不及物动词( 其后不接 that 从句) 。如:
He insisted that she (should) do it. 他坚持要她做那事。

1. interesting 表示使人感兴趣,interested 表示某人自己本身感兴趣。如:
The story is very interesting, so all the children are interested in it. 这个故事很有趣,所以所有的孩子都对它感兴趣。
2. 不要认为 interesting 一定指物,interested 一定指人。如:
Our English teacher is very interesting. 我们的英语教师很有趣。
I read an interested expression on his face. 我看到他脸上露出一种感兴趣的表情。
3. be interested 之后可接 in doing sth 或 to do sth ,含义稍有差别:接前者意为“ 对做某事感兴趣” ,接后者意为“ 有兴趣地做某事” 。如:
He is interested in becoming a painter. 他对当画家很感兴趣( 即一心想当画家) 。
We are interested to hear your remark. 我们很有兴趣想听听你的意见。

job & work
1. 两者均可表示“ 工作” ,但 job 主要指雇佣有报酬的工作,是可数名词;而 work 指“ 工作” 、“ 劳动” ,是一个含义极广的常用词,它的基本意思指需要付出努力的工作或劳动,是不可数名词。如:
He has a good job in the bank. 他在银行有份不错的工作。
It took a lot of work to build a house. 造一座房子花很多劳动。
This job will require a lot of hard work. 这项工作需要付出很多努力。
注:有时 work 也指“ 职业” 或“ 工作” 等,但此时多指工作的性质或场所。如:
My work is in medicine. 我行医。
We go to work at eight. 我们 8 点去上班。
2. job 表示“ 工作” ,在口语中有时还表示已经做好的或必须要去做的事情等。如:
You’ve done a good job. 你做得很不错。
He gets paid by the job. 他是按件取酬。
join, take part in & attend
1. join 的主要用法如下:
(1) 表示参加或加入某团体、党派、组织等,并成为其中的一个成员。如:
join the Party 入党 join the League 入团
join the Army 参军 join the Trade Union 参加工会
注:join 是终止性动词,不能与时间段状语连用。如:
他入党 10 年了。
误:He has joined the Party for 10 years.
正:He has been in the Party for 10 years.
正:He has been a Party member for 10 years.
正:He joined the Party 10 years ago.
正:It’s 10 years since he joined the Party.
(2) 表示与某人在一起或伴随某人做某事,通常用 join sb 或 join sb in (doing) sth 。如:
You go ahead. I’ll join you shortly. 你们先开始, 我一会就来( 一起干) 。
Will you join me in a walk (in singing the song)? 同我一起去散步( 一起唱歌) 好吗?
注:若表示直接参加某项活动( 即不具体说出与某人在一起) ,以上各句式中可以不出现 sb 。如:
I joined in rowing. 我参加一起划船。
May I join in (the game)? 我可以参加( 做游戏) 吗?
2. attend 表示“ 出席” 、“ 参加” ,主要用于参加会议等。如:
attend a meeting 参加会议 attend a lecture 参加演讲会
attend a report 参加报告会 attend a reception 参加招待会
注:这样用的 attend 主要指参加去听演讲或去听报告等,而不是自己做演讲或作报告等。
3. take part in 的主要用法:
(1) 表示参加某项工作或事业,并在其中起一定作用。如:
take part in the sports meet 参加运动会
take part in the contest 参加比赛
take part in the Long March 参加长征
take part in political activities 参加政治活动
take part in designing new items 参加设计新产品
注:有时也用于参加某一活动,此时的 take part in 可与 join in 换用。如:
He took part in the discussion. 他参加了讨论会。
(2) 表示参加会议( 可与 attend 互换) 。如:
Did you take part in [attend] the meeting yesterday? 你参加了昨天的会议吗?

keep & keep on
两者均可后接动名词( 不接不定式),区别如下:
1. 表示反复发生的动作( 即动作之间略有间隔) 时,两者可互换。如:
They kept (on) talking about it. 他们一直在谈论此事。
My shoe laces keep (on) coming undone. 我的鞋带老是松开。
2. 表示持续的状态或连续不断的动作( 动作之间没有间隔) 时, 通常只用 keep doing sth 。如:
He kept standing during the meeting. 开会时他一直站着。
We kept hoping that they would have a chance to come to China some day. 我们一直希望他们什么时候有机会到中国来。
3. 表示将一直在做的事继续做下去,通常只用 keep on doing 。如:
He kept on working after dark. 天黑了他还继续干。
Don’t give up; keep on trying. 别灰心,继续努力。
注:这样的 keep on doing 可与 go on doing 换用。如:
The boys kept [went] on doing their homework in spite of interruptions. 尽管有干扰,孩子们仍继续做自己的作业。
4. 有时若意义明确,keep on 后的 doing sth 可省略,而 keep 后却不能省略 doing sth 。如:
The rain kept on for several days. 雨一连下了好几天。
kind & kindly
1. kind 可用作形容词,但不用作副词;而 kindly 既可用作形容词,也可用作副词。如:
He is a kind(ly) person. 他是个仁慈的人。( 用作形容词)
They kindly asked us to the concert. 他们友好地请我们参加听音乐会。( 用作副词)
2. 两者都可用作形容词,表示“ 亲切的” 或“ 善良的” ,但前者主要是从总体上描述一个人的“ 善良” 和“ 亲切” ;后者虽然也可这样用,但它更多是描述一个人在某一特定时候的“ 友好” 或“ 善意” ,所以像下面各句中的 kind 通常不宜用 kindly 代换:
It’s kind of you to say so. 你这样说真是太客气了。
You are kind to say so. 你这样说真是太好了。
He is kind to us all. 他对我们大家都很好。
